Getting enough sleep 💤 is one of the easiest & FREE things you can do to improve your health & well-being.

We all know how important it is to get enough sleep.
But yet, we are a sleep deprived nation. Some of it is because of a sleep disorder, but In general, we do not put ourselves first. For many, that means getting to bed on time.

Below are sleep goals by age:
Adults: 7-9 hours
Teens: 8-10 hours
Children (6 – 12 years): 9- 12 hours
Children (3 – 5 years): 10 – 13 hours
Children (1- 2 years): 11- 14 hours
Infants: 12-16 hours

In addition to making us grumpy, groggy & foggy brained, chronic sleep deprivation can contribute to:

😴 Weak immune system
😴 High blood pressure
😴 Car accidents & other work related errors

Try this when you are experiencing anxiety, having a stressful day, or having difficulty sleeping. This simple to learn breathing technique rooted in yoga practice can help to quickly bring you back to your center. It also works wonders when you just need to re-focus, or want a boost in creativity.

Here’s alternate nostril breathing 101:
1. Sit comfortably.
2. Take your right hand and gently rest your pointer and middle finger between your eyebrows.
3. Let your thumb rest on the outside of the right nostril and your ring finger on the outside your left nostril.
4. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in and out through your nose.
5. Close your right nostril gently with your right thumb. Inhale through the left nostril slowly and steadily for 5 counts.
6. Close the left nostril with your ring finger. Both nostrils should be held closed while you hold your breath at the top of the inhale for 5 counts.
7. Open your right nostril and exhale for 5 counts slowly through the right nostril.
8. Pause briefly at the bottom of the exhale.
9. Inhale through the right side slowly for 5 counts.
10. Hold both nostrils closed using your ring finger and thumb for 5 counts.
11. Open your left nostril and exhale slowly through the left side again for 5 counts. Pause briefly at the bottom.
12. Repeat for 5-10 cycles, allowing your mind to follow your breath.

If you are new to breathwork you can start with a 3 second cycle and work your way up. Each full cycle should take approximately 25-45 seconds depending on how long you hold the breath. Aim to do 5-10 cycles each time.
If you stop and take just 5 minutes to do Nadi shodama, you can significantly lower or eliminate your anxiety, and re-center yourself for a relaxed and beautiful day.
