Eric Lee’s JOURNEY TO 30 presents:
Mana‘o Monday!!

12/18/23 – “Nou E Pauahi” (Lyrics & music by Eric Lee & Louis “Moon” Kauakahi)

The first half of this song was composed in honor of Eric’s high school class from Kamehameha, whose class color was “hinahina” or gray. It was specially composed in honor of his classmates who had already passed on. The second half of the song honors Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, who through her legacy of the Kamehameha Schools and Bishop Estate, provides through today a promising future of quality education for the Hawaiian people.

The recording of this song was strategically planned around Eric’s next class reunion, to afford the most opportunities for his classmates to join him in-studio to sing the second half of the song, performed in the choir style Kamehameha is known for: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass (SATB) with some areas including two soprano parts, two tenor parts and a baritone.

Eric Lee sings lead vocal and plays 6-string guitar & upright bass. Louis “Moon” Kauakahi sings backup vocal and plays 6-string guitar. David Kauahikaua plays piano and provides all Hawaiian and orchestral accompaniment.

INSIDE SCOOP:
Eric’s high school class has been widely known in the Kamehameha legacy to have bred some of the most talented people involved in our Hawaiian community today. One of them was able to attend the studio session to record this song alongside her classmates – Mele Apana!

Happy Birthday to our Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop come this Tuesday, December 19th!!

Eric Lee’s JOURNEY TO 30 presents:
Mana‘o Monday!!

12/11/23 – “E Ola Ke’Li‘i” (Composed by Eric Lee)

With an upbringing in religious education and attending weekly church services, the season of Christmas was surely a time of year to look forward to! Along with the birth of a very important influential figure came the festiveness of the season – the family gatherings, the décor and the music (of course, there was the glamour of commercialism that naturally appealed to the innocence of the child’s eye as well). As one who has always been attracted to music, I naturally fell in love with all the carols – both traditional and contemporary - religious and non-religious alike.

While a member of the group, Nā K**a, I composed this mele for our first Christmas album which became the title cut. A lively opening to the album line-up with a dash of musical arrangement influence reflective of another group I eventually became a member of. The Hawaiian lyrical content praising the Reason for the Season.

Eric Lee’s JOURNEY TO 30 presents:
Mana‘o Monday!! (On a Tuesday! 😉)

12/04/23 – “Let the Light Shine Upon Me” (Composed by Eric Lee)

I started playing music in church, first on ‘ukulele, then on keyboard, and finally on guitar. My ministry began while I was a sophomore in high school and I’m still involved today. Although I don’t proclaim to be a saint, I do have the love of Jesus in my heart. I firmly believe all my gifts and blessings flow from Him, and I take great pleasure in being able to give it back through ministry, in the church or elsewhere.

Making a Christian album was a dream over 20 years in the making. When the opportunity finally came, I was so excited! “Let the Light Shine Upon Me” (the title cut) was composed in 1995 for my church’s Easter service. At the time, it seemed decent, but I was never really settled with the lyrical content. In October of that year, my grandfather passed away and I dedicated the song to him when I performed it once again at his funeral service. Through the years since, I’ve put the song away and never really looked at it again until beginning work on the Christian album (released November 27, 2018). The lyrics were tweaked, and the result became what I truly believe the song was meant to be; a vision of what my grandfather may have experienced upon his passing.

In celebration of the 5th anniversary of this album’s release, may this Christmas season bring you great joy and cheer.

Eric Lee’s JOURNEY TO 30 presents:
Mana‘o Monday!!

11/27/23 – “Da Christmas Eve Shopping Blues” (Composed by Eric Lee)

For over 40 years, Frank De Lima and Karen Keawehawai‘i have been in Hawai‘i’s spotlight – Frank, best known for his stand-up comedy and Karen, for her solo singing career post-group, The Laughing Kahunas. Frank has also included singing in his career, winning the Nā Hōkū Hanohano award “Song of the Year” for his beautiful recording of “Waimea Lullaby”, while Karen has been known to include her own witty humor on-stage while performing. So, one would be rest assured to know when they go to watch either Frank or Karen perform, they’re getting their money’s worth!

Put them together, however, and you’re in for a treat!

I enjoyed watching them together on-screen for Frank De Lima’s Hawaiian Christmas Carol TV special on KGMB in 1982. Their comedic timing and chemistry were spot on!

All these years later, my dream of working with both together again, and for Christmas, felt like a come-full-circle experience for the little kid in me! When I reached out to them about this project, they were very excited and loved the concept of the song. Having them in-studio was such a pleasure! Laughter from beginning to end, hearing them banter on each other in-between takes – it was like they just picked up from where they left off in ’82!

I added dialogue around the verses and chorus to carry the storyline along and give the comedic artistry of theirs a chance to shine (with a great cameo by Auggie T. himself)! My family and some dear friends pitched in with me to create the family chorus atmosphere and voila!

Frank De Lima has been investing a lot of his time since 1985 as a personal commitment to make a positive difference in the life of every boy and girl in Hawai‘i. As a successful entertainer with the gift of comedic communication, Frank believed that he could reach the youth. His early presentations involved speaking engagements to elementary school-aged children that shared the importance of education, family, and humor.

Since then, those visitations have increased to annual presentations of approximately 180 elementary and middle/intermediate schools throughout Hawai‘i. It takes Frank two years to complete the visitation cycle. Please consider helping Frank’s mission by donating to his Student Enrichment Program HERE.

Karen can be seen today performing with the Royal Hawaiian Band and also co-hosting with Michael W. Perry and the KSSK possie for their special events broadcasted on Hawai‘i’s 92.3 FM KSSK.

Eric Lee’s JOURNEY TO 30 presents:
Mana‘o Monday!!

11/20/23 – “Prayer Train” (Composed by Eric Lee)

This song was a chance to expand on my songwriting skills. When writing in Hawaiian, my language level and subject of choice affords me to cover mostly about aloha – love for the ‘āina (land), love for a memory in the past, love for a person. When writing for my Christian album “Let the Light Shine Upon Me”, all the songs were composed in English, which gave me the opportunity to tap into deeper subjects of life to write about.

As I got older, I have become more aware of things like society, politics, economy, and other aspects of everyday life. Your perspective of life evolves from simple youth innocence to a more impactful adult life.

The message behind the song is a simple subtle reminder that in all things, we need to hold on to our beliefs that life could and can be better. Whatever your faith source is, hold on to it. Keep the faith! In borrowing the words from a good friend of mine: “If He brings you to it, He’ll bring you through it!”

On this Thanksgiving, may we take the time to be thankful for what we have (because somewhere in the world, someone has less). I thank you all for supporting me throughout these past 30 years…God bless you all!
