So last weekend I was one of 20 artists painting live at Artcetera. It was a FANTASTIC event! Our work was auctioned to contribute to the Pablove Foundation whose mission is to “Improve the lives of children with cancer through the arts.” And, “Invest in underfunded, cutting-edge pediatric cancer research.” I was beyond thrilled to meet some of the kids that are part of their program! I’m beyond grateful to have been part of something so special! Thank you ARTcetera Houston!!! And all the lovely people I met, big hugs!!!
In case y’all were wondering what I’m doing this weekend! This is it! 😉
Up next y’all! Let’s try this again… 😝

One stroke at a time....
I started doodling with pen on paper in high school to keep my hands and thoughts occupied. Many notebooks later when I was studying graphic design I was assigned to make a painting. All I knew how to do were dashes so I tried to paint in the same way. I discovered that my doodling actually translated into a type of pointillism with acrylics on canvas. Because acrylics dry fast, they allowed me to paint in layers and create textures. I’ve continued to use acrylics primarily but also have begun incorporating ink into my line work as the fluidity of the inks allows the technique to reveal itself perfectly. I’ve been creating studies with watercolor too lately as I’ve improved the control of my brushstrokes to take full advantage of these new mediums. Instead of dots or dashes my current work is made with layers of fine lines that fill a canvas to create an image. Although most of my subject matter is abstract some images take on an accidental form such as a flower, a sea creature, or a landscape. I use bright colors and sometimes fluorescents to give even more impact and contrast. I am attracted to vivid color palettes that remind me of the magic of life.
Although in my 20s and 30s I explored my painting skills casually, it’s only been within the last 5 years or so that I set my sights on a professional career as a visual artist. I have a sense of urgency now to catch up and make up for the time I wish I had spent earlier in my life developing my craft. I use every available minute to paint, draw, doodle, imagine, plan, share, research to better prepare myself and grow my technique. With every small success, the ideas and motivation pour out stronger and stronger. It feels almost obsessive at times when I have an idea to get down on paper or canvas, as if an energy outside of myself is pushing me to do it.
The passion that I have to continuously create as much as I can seems to come from a previously neglected part of me. Before I dove into the professional art scene I always felt this sort of rumbling under the surface, like a nagging reminder that I’m not letting out something inside of me. I believe there is something truly unique inside all of us and I’ve been fortunate enough to discover how my true self is revealed. There is no stopping it now, nor can I even imagine my life without creation as the main focus of my energy.
What started off as a way to occupy an otherwise stressed mind has now become my escape and my peace.
