Dear NAU family,
It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the untimely passing of one of our students, Velibeg Garlyyev, due to a tragic car accident on June 5, 2024.
Velibeg was a valued member of our community, known for being friendly, honest, sincere, and affectionate. The suddenness of this loss deeply affects us all, and we extend our deepest sympathies to Velibeg’s family, friends, and all who knew him at North American University.
To support Velibeg’s family with funeral expenses and the cost of transporting him back to his home country, Turkmenistan, a GoFundMe page has been set up. We encourage those who can, to contribute to easing this financial burden on his family during this difficult time. You can find the GoFundMe link below:
https://gofund.me/36521517
In addition, a memorial desk has been set up on the first floor, where community members can leave messages and sign a notebook in Velibeg’s memory. This will allow us to collect and share our thoughts and condolences with his family.
During this challenging time, we encourage everyone to support each other and remember Velibeg for the positive impact he made in our lives. Additionally, counseling services are available for any student or staff member in need of support. Please contact Student Services to speak with a counselor.
We invite all who knew Velibeg to share their memories and support each other, helping us honor his life and contributions to our community.

Library vibes: where the only loud noises are the whispers of students arguing with their textbooks… and maybe the occasional rustling of snack wrappers.
Black History Month, celebrated in February, holds profound importance as it provides a dedicated space to recognize and honor the rich and often overlooked contributions of African Americans throughout history.
Established in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson as Negro History Week and later expanded to a month-long observance, it serves as a crucial opportunity to spotlight pivotal moments like the abolition of slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and the achievements of notable figures. By highlighting the struggles and triumphs of African Americans, Black History Month fosters a more comprehensive understanding of the nation’s history, fostering empathy and appreciation for the diverse narratives that have shaped the American experience.
The significance of Black History Month extends beyond historical reflection; it serves as a catalyst for ongoing conversations about racial equality and justice. By amplifying the voices of African Americans and acknowledging their impact across various fields, the month encourages a broader societal awareness of the need for inclusivity. It inspires individuals to engage in meaningful dialogue, challenging systemic racism and discrimination.
Black History Month stands as a reminder that the fight for equality is continuous, fostering a collective commitment to building a more just and equitable society where the contributions of all individuals, regardless of race or background, are acknowledged and celebrated year-round.
Individuals are encouraged to explore knowledge about Black History Month at North American University and beyond, embracing the opportunity to enrich their understanding of African American history and its enduring impact.
