Kevin Brumfield (49) has been an avid climber his entire life. After he lost his leg two years ago, he worked tirelessly in physical therapy and adapted to his new life as an amputee in order to get back on the mountain. two years to the day since he was first sent home with his prosthesis, Kevin climbed Handies Peak (elevation 14,048 feet) with his son, Britt, and good friend, John, by his side. Congratulations, Kevin!

I never expected to enter my 50’s as a quadruple amputee, but life had other plans. After a sudden illness resulted in a diagnosis of toxic shock syndrome, I needed help to deal with my loss of mobility. Though my life was drastically changed, I knew I could survive, but I wanted more than that. I still had a long life ahead of me with plans to fill it, and just surviving wasn’t going to be good enough. I was going to thrive. But the question was , how?
I first heard of Holmes Prosthetic Center when I was still inpatient at TIRR. There we formed a solid, lasting bond. Jon and Sonny went beyond what was expected from them to help me come to terms with the changes in my life going forward. They empowered me to be an active participant in my treatment plan, encouraged me to ask questions, and worked with my physician to ensure I met my treatment goals. They helped me cope with my fears of not knowing what my future held by giving me the tools I needed to move forward, one step at a time. It was their investment in my future that helped me take that first step.
Six years later and my life is better than I could’ve imagined. I’ve become someone who no longer asks if I can do something but asks how. I will always appreciate the staff at Holmes Prosthetic Center for their support as I struggled to face my new normal. Everyone in the office is welcoming and attentive, and they always make me feel like I’m the only patient they have. Without their continuing care I wouldn’t be able to do the things I can do today. In fact, there are very few things I can’t do for myself. I’m proud and grateful for my independence, and I wouldn’t have that without Jon and Sonny and staff. With self-determination, the right people around you and the right tools, anything is possible.
Today we are sharing Joey’s story:
Near death experiences are a surreal feeling. They alter your perspective on the life you lead, your reality, and your mentality. It’s been about 9 months since I lost my left leg below the knee in a motorcycle accident coming home from work one evening. My hardest time adjusting to my new life as an amputee thus far wasn’t whenever the doctor took my leg, or when I started therapy. It was when I first came home and I mentally and physically had to try to readjust to my life, of course I have the most amazing support system but you also have to be able to rely on yourself no matter how difficult it is believe in yourself. You adapt and overcome and although that process doesn’t seem like the easiest it’s what you do when you aren’t going to settle on the life you want to lead. Holmes prosthetics has helped me greatly in starting the process of achieving just that. They had me learning to walk again just merely 6 months after my accident. I have them to thank for getting me back up on two legs, I am forever appreciative for having them as apart of my team. Never give up.
Holmes Prosthetic Center, will be sharing a weekly encouraging short story for the month of April.
This is Morgan’s story:
I was a student at the University of Oklahoma, studying to earn a Chemical Engineering degree. October 14, 2019 my life changed forever. I was taken to the ER for a blood clot, most likely related to her Ulcerative Colitis medications. (I was diagnosed in Oct 2018 with sudden onset UC, a disease of the colon which has no known cause or cure). While I was in the ICU, my colon perforated and dumped necrotizing fasciitis into my right leg, I lost both my colon and my right leg. An above knee amputation ultimately saved my life. I spent 18 day in ICU, had 8+ surgeries, and I spent over 2 months in the hospital. I withdrew from school while I worked to get back on my feet. Lucky for me, I was able to stay in Houston getting care I needed surrounded by the support of my family. Jon Holmes took a chance on me and got me into a prosthetic as soon as my medical team gave the clearance. I worked really hard to be able to be walking by the fall, with hopes to get back onto a college campus. My entire team, pushed me and helped me get to the point where I could return to school independently! After over a year of recovery, physical therapy, and hard work, I have returned back to the University of Oklahoma to finish my degree and graduation May!
