National Therapeutic Recreation Week, observed annually the second full week of July, is an opportune time to highlight the significant role of therapeutic recreation in promoting senior health and well-being. Looking for ways to celebrate? Here are some suggestions:

Organize a variety of recreational activities:
Plan a week-long schedule of therapeutic recreational activities specifically designed for seniors. This can include gentle exercise classes, arts and crafts sessions, music therapy sessions, gardening activities, and interactive games.
Collaborate with local businesses:
Reach out to local organizations, such as the library, community center, or health club to see if they would be willing to lead an educational session, craft, or fitness lessons that may be tailored to an older audience.
Showcase success stories:
Share success stories and testimonials from seniors who have benefitted from therapeutic recreation programs. Highlight the positive impact these activities have had on their physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. Share via social media posts, community newsletters, or even host a virtual or in-person discussion where past and current individuals can share their experiences.
Family involvement:
Invite and encourage family members to join their loved ones for any and all activities. Spending time together builds positive relationships. Activities may include picnics, intergenerational games, or family-friendly craft projects that promote a sense of togetherness.
Volunteer appreciation:
Host a volunteer appreciation event to express gratitude for their valuable time, commitment, and effort.
Encourage the volunteers to share stories about how they interact and improve the lives of seniors.

Happy 4th of July! On the 4th we celebrate Independence Day, it provides an opportunity for all of us to reflect on its true meaning. To be American is about so much more than simply a place that we call home. It is about a deeply felt commitment to the higher principles of liberty and equality.
Independence Day reminds us to be grateful for the blessings that our freedom represents and for the opportunities that it provides. We are all humbled in remembrance of the courageous men and women who have served and sacrificed to preserve and protect our liberties. Today, we celebrate our free nation with parades, feasts, festivals, fireworks and family cookouts. May you and your loved ones have the opportunity to have a safe and fun 4th of July.

We would like to wish a very special congratulations to our STAR of month for June, Ms. Vikki! Vikki has been working as the weekend double nurse since 2001! Vikki is a familiar face for a lot of families as she is usually seen during the weekends working hard to make sure our residents are getting the care they need. Vikki also has a great relationship with the staff here as everyone loves working with her. Vikki is showing our STAR attributes each day she’s here, and she is very well deserving of the award! Congratulations, Vikki!

Every June, we celebrate National Hydration Day. We recognize that maintaining adequate hydration is an essential component of health at every stage of life. For seniors, proper hydration has been associated with fewer falls, less constipation, better recoveries in orthopedic patients, reduced risk of bladder cancer in men and lower rates of fatal heart disease. Getting enough water in your body can prevent you from getting dehydrated.
Tips for staying hydrated:
* Water is best, but sports drinks and coconut water provide important electrolytes.
* Make sure water is within reach at all times, so it can be consumed in sips throughout the day.
* Infuse water with flavor by adding mint or fruits, such as watermelon, berries, oranges or lemon
* Keep a hydration log (or download a hydration app on your device) where you can easily update it
Signs of Dehydration:
* Dry mouth
* Dizziness
* Dark and/or odorous urine
* Headache
* Tired or lethargic
Talk to a medical professional to find out how much water you need daily, and be sure to stay hydrated all summer long!

Happy Juneteenth! The freedom of African Americans from slavery in the U.S. in 1865 is celebrated today on June 19. Juneteenth is made up of the words ‘June’ and ‘nineteenth,’ and it is on this day that Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas more than 155 years ago to inform slaves that slavery had been abolished. Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in the U.S. and commemorates African-American freedom. There are many people who have fought for the equality and freedoms of African Americans. Some of the most recognizable names are Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Mildred Loving, Fredrick Douglas and most recently Ms. Opal Lee from Fort Worth, Texas. Ms. Lee has said, “All of this is about freedom. Not just people of Texas, not just black people but all people. Freedom is what Juneteenth is about… for people of different nationalities… We should be a community of one… So we can change into a community of loving.”

Happy Father’s Day to all the Fathers and Father figures in our lives! Where would we be without dads? Honestly, who would show off ‘dad jeans,’ tell the same amusing jokes at Thanksgiving, or spin those charming childhood stories? There’s far more to dads than their wardrobe choices and endless nostalgia for the ‘good old days,’ for ‘good music’ and ‘when I was your age…’ stories. To so many, Dad’s are real heroes in our lives. One of the best ways to celebrate is to let him know how much you appreciate him. Make notes about all the little things he does for the you and household on a daily basis. Then, on Father’s Day, tell him how much you appreciate these small things, and that it doesn’t go unnoticed. Talk to dad and see how he feels about a family outing, and choose something everyone, at any age, can take part in. This will give him plenty of memories and stories to bring up at later family gatherings, and what could he want more than that? Time is the best present we call all give each other. Today, we wish all the Father’s a day full of love and new memories.

Happy Flag Day! The United States Flag is one of the most recognizable flags in all the world. America’s Flag Day marks the Second Continental Congress’s adoption of the first U.S. national flag on June 14, 1777. The first flag featured the same 13 red and white stripes we see today. However, the number and arrangement of stars have changed as the number of states has increased over the centuries. The current flag has remained the same since 1960. Today, the stars and stripes aren’t just for flags anymore. Take the opportunity on Flag Day to sport the red, white, and blue on socks, tshirts, hats, wrist bands, and even hairstyles. It’s a perfect day to celebrate your patriotism with a fun twist. Happy Flag Day!

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. It is a progressive disease that affects memory, thinking, and behavior.
There is no cure, but early detection and management can help improve quality of life for those affected.
So, what can we do to promote brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline? Here are a few tips:

Stay physically active: Exercise is good for the body and the brain. Regular physical activity can help improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of dementia.

Eat a healthy diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Studies have also shown that a Mediterranean-style diet may be particularly beneficial.

Stay mentally active: Keep your brain engaged by doing puzzles, playing games, or learning something new. Mental stimulation can help improve cognitive function and may reduce the risk of dementia.

Stay socially active: Social isolation and loneliness can have negative effects on cognitive function. Stay connected with friends and family, join a club or organization, or volunteer in your community.

Have a meaningful Memorial Day. Today we have the opportunity to set aside time to honor the servicemen and women that made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of the United States. Many people get to gather today with friends and family to enjoy the hard fought freedoms our military have sacrificed for. They take a moment to honor and remember their loved ones that are no longer with us. As get to spend time together today, enjoying something off the grill, wearing red white and blue, seeing all the American flags that have been put out… as we take it all in, take a moment with those around you to honor America’s fallen.
