With $2.6 million in new support from the National Institutes of Health, UHCOP's Mingfu Wu, Ph.D., believes he is zeroing in on key mechanisms behind how the heart forms in the womb that could open potential pathways for novel therapeutics for the condition known as left ventricular non-compaction or "spongy heart" disease.

UHCOP Pharm.D. candidate Tyler Trinh's career plans turned to professional pharmacy after witnessing the commitment of the pharmacists at his workplace during the COVID-19 pandemic. This change in paths would take him to leadership positions in the Texas Pharmacy Association - Students and a new target: making a difference on a global scale within the pharmaceutical industry.

UHCOP’s Samina Salim, Ph.D., recently returned from her latest academic outreach initiative in Jordan to discuss her research into mental health within the Syrian refugee population, which now exceeds more than 1 million in Jordan. A U.S. Fulbright Specialist, Salim presented “Understanding Stress: Insights From Psychological, Behavioral and Biochemical Studies” at Al-Balqa Applied University and the University of Jordan.
In observance of Labor Day, UHCOP offices will be closed and no classes will be held on Monday, September 2.
When his grandfather was diagnosed with kidney cancer, Pharm.D. candidate Josiah Willingham moved to Houston to help take care of him. Quickly noticing, and becoming frustrated with, the high cost of his grandfather’s medicines, Willingham met an important figure who provided solace to his family and impacted Willingham's career aspirations.

Cancer. Out-of-pocket costs. And bad news for middle-class people with insurance ACA ("Obamacare") made cancer treatment more affordable for the lowest-income Americans. But middle-class people with insurance still struggle to pay the costs.

UHCOP's faculty, staff and students are excited to work with another great pair of Academic Pharmacy Fellows during 2024-25: Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center alumna Berkley Freund, Pharm.D., who completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at CHI St. Luke's Health-St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital in Bryan, and UHCOP alumna Nisha Mohiuddin, Pharm.D., who completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at CHI St. Luke's Health-Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center.
This year's PPS Research Symposium featured over 50 podium and poster presentations by graduate and undergraduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows showcasing their work conducted in UHCOP labs and/or in collaboration with UHCOP faculty members.

UHCOP Pharm.D. students engaged in more than 2,800 patient encounters, including childhood immunization screenings, wellness screenings and health education, at the 2024 Houston Mayor's Back 2 School Fest. A special thank you goes out to our volunteer preceptors from UHCOP, the Gulf Coast Society of Health System Pharmacists and Walgreens.
