Over $1,500 was raised for Blue-throated Macaw habitat restoration on the reserve in Bolivia named by Asociación Civil Armoníain tribute to my late sister for her dedication to “Saving the Blues”!

Happy New Year from Bird Endowment!

This exquisite photo was taken by my late sister Laney Rickman of three of her Blue-throated Macaws… 
I miss her every single day, and I am very proud of my dear sister, who founded Bird Endowment in 1998.

The Laney Rickman Blue-throated Macaw Reserve was named in tribute to her when the property was acquired by Asociación Civil Armonía in Bolivia in 2018, recognizing her for her dedicated efforts towards saving this critically endangered bird from extinction.

The Laney Rickman reserve is conserving a vitally important piece of land, the primary breeding grounds for the Blue-throated Macaw, and securing the long-term potential of the Nido Adoptivo nest box program. Since 2007, an incredible 128 Blue-throated Macaws have fledged from the nest boxes.

When Laney Rickman started the project in partnership with Armonía, there were only 100–150 remaining in the wild and declining… Since then, numbers of this beautiful bird have increased dramatically to 420 - 480 adult Blue-throated Macaws in the wild! The number of fledglings from the nest boxes is quite significant - more than 25% of the wild population - and trending upward!

We are deeply grateful to the countless supporters who have given and continue to give so generously to make this happen!

Did you know that some consider the Blue Throated Macaw the most intelligent of the Macaw species? If you have ever worked with one, you can attest how they will take their enclosure apart like a cockatoo un-doing all the bolts and screws or anything else in their exhibit.
