Meet Jovita, a 61-year-old resident of Parramos, Chimaltenango. For nearly two years, Jovita suffered from excruciating pain in her right hip, which ultimately led to her relying on a wheelchair due to joint degeneration. Despite the hardships, she never lost faith and continued to pray for a new hip for over a year.

The Rosemont Baptist Church conducted a faith-based mission trip to Guatemala the week before the Heinrich/Pond team arrived. During this trip, the missions minister learned about Jovita's condition and shared her story with Dr. Ruark.

Despite having a fully booked schedule, Dr. Heinrich was moved by Jovita's story and decided to add her to his surgery schedule. Thanks to the Heinrich/Pond team, Jovita underwent a successful total hip replacement surgery, which will allow her to walk pain-free once again.

The church’s mission trip became a vessel for God's plan to answer Jovita’s prayers for a new hip, revealing His ability to work through people to fulfill His promises.

Meet Angela, who recently underwent a successful surgery with the T. Davis team. For over 29 years, Angela suffered from severe pain and bladder issues. Despite previous surgeries, she found no relief. Desperate for a solution, she turned to the T. Davis team, hoping to finally overcome her condition. This time, her surgery was a success.

Post-surgery, Angela became the friendliest patient in the hospital, always greeting everyone she saw. She believed her stay had a deeper purpose: to share her faith with other patients. Angela's gratitude towards the T. Davis team was immense, as they not only removed her pain but also restored her ability to spread kindness and hope.

Felicity and her husband Richard Rosenthal are committed and multi-talented members of the Faith In Practice volunteer community. Over the past 21 years, they have participated in over 70 trips, serving in roles as diverse as village and surgical teams, eye glass program sponsors, and women’s health team coordinators and educators.

Felicity has always been inspired to be of service. Her career was as a Certified Nurse Midwife working in Public Health in the Denver area. Many of her clients were from Central America, and she is fluent in Spanish. She first learned of Faith In Practice from her sister, who was a team leader. She was inspired by the work and the people she met within Faith In Practice, and this continues to be true today.

Creating lasting change in the lives of individuals is important to her. She feels that she has best been able to accomplish this through her work leading teams, identifying surgical candidates so that they can access otherwise unobtainable high-quality surgeries, and enhancing the skills of many of Guatemala’s Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs).

Felicity and Richard feel that modeling humanitarian service work has been an important part of parenting their three sons. Felicity’s connection to her spirituality is expressed through her commitment to using her skills to improve the greater world community. She calls it simply “showing up.”

Meet Javier

Javier's journey to the care of the 810 Wani Team began with a scar on his hand, a testament to his turbulent past. Left as a baby in front of a church for reasons only his birth mother understands, his story is one of resilience and hope. Despite the abandonment, his adopted mother was right there to comfort him.

Dr. Rodger Brown and his team tirelessly worked to remove the scar tissue and graft skin from Javier's stomach, offering him the chance to fully extend his fingers and embrace a new beginning.
Javier's hand was carefully wrapped after the surgery to safeguard the delicate graft. Despite the discomfort, his infectious laughter echoed through the hospital corridors.

With God-given skilled hands and compassionate hearts, the Wani Team helped Javier rewrite his narrative, transforming scars into symbols of resilience and hope.

Your generous donations will help us continue to bring hope and healing to our patients in Guatemala. Every contribution, big or small, brings us closer to our goal.

Frankie Carr was part of the Anesthesia Team Craft 819 this past week in Guatemala. Faith In Practice

Photos from Faith In Practice's post 06/21/2024

This past week the Craft Team 819 has traveled to Retalhuleu, Guatemala for a mobility and surgical mission. Our team saw exactly 200 patients in total, 73 in surgery with 104 procedures and 127 in the mobility clinic. The surgeries performed included general surgeries such as hernia repairs and gynecology surgeries such as hysterectomies. Our mobility clinic saw patients that had a difficult time moving around independently and got them fit for wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and crutches in order to provide them with the ability to move more freely.

As we finished off the week I chose to interview one of the surgeons. When I was asking him questions he gave me very insightful answers, and one thing he said has stuck with me. He explained that we are not here to be these people’s heroes, we need to not think we are saving these patients and rather we need to allow ourselves to be just as impacted by our patients as they are by us, this is how we will find joy in what we are doing. After thinking about this for a while I have come to realize that yes, we too are impacted by this mission trip. I will forever be changed after this experience. I am so grateful that I have been able to see a new perspective on life, I have seen a new world and learned so much.

I thank all of those who sponsored this mission with their donations and support. Without you not only would we have not impacted the 200 patients and their families, but we also would not have been impacted ourselves. Thank you so much. Your love and support has left all of us forever changed.

Like a thundering waterfall or a bubbling spring, the Holy Spirit indwells all believers, filling them with eternal life. The water is never stagnant, full of bacteria, or decay. The source never runs dry. The Spirit satiates all thirst, eternally shaping, refreshing, and renewing our souls. Literal water is integral to life on earth as the Holy Spirit is to our spiritual life.

Jesus Christ grants living water to all who ask.

The T. Davis team’s week began with travel delays and uncertainties about how the week would unfold in Antigua. However, by the end of the week, we were in awe of the trust and faith that our patients placed in God and our team. We met over 60 patients who traveled hours, entrusting their lives or the lives of their loved ones to strangers, hoping to return to their communities healed of the ailments that brought them to us.

Our team performed around 120 surgeries, including general, gynecological, and plastic procedures, each with its own complexities but all aimed at improving the lives of our patients. Even during uncertainties, our team was made strong by our commitment to the people of Guatemala. We will forever be in awe of how unwavering trust transcended fears and anxieties during each one of the patient’s journeys.

This mission would not have been possible without the local staff, our friends and families, donors, and the support of those who stood by us in prayer. Each sacrifice has made a lasting impact in Guatemala, creating waves of change that will be felt for years to come.
