: Introduces Pistol And Classifications: 1939 National Matches.

The euphoria that thousands of competitors experienced upon crossing the Camp Perry threshold for the 1939 edition of the National Matches was offset by the sobering news midway through this year’s program that Adolf Hitler’s German forces invaded Poland. Belying the seriousness of it all was a simple “Not Reported” entry in the score area of the results bulletin for Germany in the international smallbore RWS Match. Ironically, the record entries and scores in 1939 served somewhat as a prophetic fulfillment from an earlier generation’s establishment of the National Matches for military preparedness. Reports of the conflict overseas prompted The American Rifleman to report that, “It was nice to know that, come what might, America boasted the best marksmen in the world and that there you were, surrounded by some 4,000 of them. The feeling of security was clinched when the U.S. Marine team of eight in the Herrick Match rammed 160 straight shots into the five-ring at 1,000 yards, one of the greatest shooting feats in history.” Although U.S. involvement in World War II was not immediate, National Guardsmen and reservists who competed at the 1939 National Matches were among the many called to active duty based on President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s declaration of a limited national emergency.

Legendary Melvin Forbes Passes Away.

Melvin Forbes, founder of New Ultra Light Arms and a pioneer in the building of light rifles, passed away at his Granville, W.V., home on June 5, 2024. He was 77 years old. A lifelong West Virginia resident, Forbes was born on Nov. 25, 1946 in Morgantown, W.V. After graduating from high school in 1965, Forbes started as a mold maker in the glass industry. An interest in fi****ms led him to start a part-time job as a gunsmith, and he developed his skills as an expert machinist, eventually teaching classes at the Monongalia County Vocational School. In 1984, Forbes founded Ultra Light Arms to develop what became known as the Model 20, ultimately recognized as one of the most capable lightweight rifles ever made. Forbes' rifles were sold across the world and were featured widely in outdoor writings. By 1999, Ultra Light Arms was successful enough to attract the attention of C**t, which bought the company. Unfortunately, under C**t's management, Ultra Light Arms struggled, leading Forbes to buy it back.

New For 2024: **t Viper.

C**t has been steadily rebuilding its "snake gun" lineup over the past few years, and the new-for-2024 Viper is the latest new reintroduction. However, this C**t Viper is not like the first-generation Viper of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The changes incorporated into the new Viper design make it more versatile and durable than before. To start with, the new C**t Viper is built on a stainless-steel frame rather than the aluminum frame of the first-generation Vipers. While this adds weight, it also improves durability, and given the strength of the steel frame, this Viper is chambered for .357 Magnum loads. Vipers from the 1970s were only capable of handling 38 Spl. cartridges.

What Makes A Go Out Of Style?

The world is full of firearm designs, models, variants and options, and we should be glad for it. But, the ones we have are the ones that “made it.” Some promising designs had problems of one kind or another, and they just dropped out of sight. Not all were due to poor quality—sometimes it was just bad luck or poor business decisions having nothing to do with the gun itself. Here are three pistols that, had things taken a slightly different turn, could have been major platforms in the gun world. Let’s take a trip back in time, shall we?

Measuring Shooting : Are You Above Average?

When I was still a teenager, I owned a Re*****on Model 700 chambered for the .270 Wi******er. It was the rifle I learned to handload for, and I once fired a one-hole group at 100 yards with it. I carried that target around in my wallet so I could brag—with evidence—when I needed to. I figured it was a pretty good shooting rifle and that I was a pretty good shot. I just didn’t know what I didn’t know. A one-hole group that’s so rare you carry the target around with you is not representative—it’s an example of one. And when it comes to measuring precision or skill, examples of one mean nothing.

Low Light Tips for Shooting in the .

Defensive handgun skills are some of the toughest to learn. There are only two points of contact with the pistol, not to mention barrel lengths are much shorter than they are on long guns. If you further complicate things by adding time limits and target discrimination, it gets even more difficult. Top this off with an inability to see; you have a recipe for disaster. The only cure for this is training and good gear! While we can't teach you everything we know about low light shooting, we can impart some tips and tricks to get you started. So, keep your light handy and read on, because there are things that go bump in the night.

2024 Product Of The Year: Federal Force X2 Shorty.

The coveted Golden Bullseye Awards, now in their 22nd year, were created as a way for us to publicly recognize the firearm industry’s best-performing, highest-value and most innovative products from the previous year. Some years there are runaway standouts, but more often than not, there are numerous contenders worthy of accolade within a given category, and the selection process to nail down a slate of recipients can require no small amount of rigorous discussion on the part of the editors. This year we were blessed with a sizable crop of great new guns that could have won an award, but below you will find our consensus winners. “Last year was one of massive new-product introductions from the recreational shooting sports industry,” said NRA Publications Executive Director Doug Hamlin. “As a result, the editorial staff had some tough decisions to make to identify the best all-new products.”

3 **ers: Rifles & Rounds Comparison.

The Ma**er action is said to be the most prolific in the history of bolt-action rifles. It is said to be the action upon which many modern-day bolt-actions are based. But that assumption is based on the Ma**er 1898 action, which is just one of many Ma**er designs, some of which date all the way back to the late 1800s. Ma**er rifles come in myriad variants and layouts. This diversity is due not only to the changing needs and desires of military units over the years but also to the wide range of countries who adopted various Ma**er-designed rifles.

: The Classics: The Handgun.

Fedor Vasilievich Tokarev was one of Russia’s foremost arms designers during the 20th century. At the age of 17 he began his studies as a gunsmith, eventually graduated college and was made an officer in a Cossack regiment. In 1907 he converted a Mosin-Nagant M1891 rifle to a semi-automatic, thus beginning a lifelong career in arms design. After surviving the Great War, he continued to work at the Izhevsk Arms plant and at one time was under sentence of death from the Bolsheviks. Needing their arms factories to function for their fledgling Red Army, the sentence was lifted, and he went to the Tula Arms factory to streamline production and to work on his designs. The standard sidearm of the Russian military since 1895 was the M1895 Nagant revolver in 7.62x38 mm R. While the world quickly adopted semi-automatic pistols for their armed forces, Russia focused on mass production of the Nagant until 1930, when a commission was formed to select a new semi-automatic pistol.

2024 Industry Deals In Full Swing.

The dog days of summer are around the corner, and the thought of hot and muggy firing-line sessions isn’t much of an incentive to purchase new guns and gear. The slight sales decline in early summer is annual, but it presents an interesting cash-flow challenge for manufacturers. With the heavy holiday shopping season approaching—and this year’s contentious presidential election looming—now’s not the time to risk idling and potentially losing experienced staff. Yet, there’s serious financial risk in continuing production at full capacity. Investing too much in an inventory collecting dust and, sooner or later, it’s tough to keep the lights on. Some companies launch smoking-hot sales, offer rebates or add incentives to keep operations running smoothly and ensure the skilled hands they rely on can still bring home the bacon. For larger firms, the promotion season has become something of a tradition. Either way, here are some of the best deals out there right now—more will likely be announced in the next few weeks. Bear in mind, each have specific limitations and are not allowed in certain areas of the nation. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply.

Marching To Their Own Beat: Smith & Wesson M&P Tempo .

The Smith & Wesson company has a history of innovation when it comes to firearm design, from its groundbreaking Model 1 revolver in 1857, to developing cartridges like the .357 Mag. and the .500 S&W Mag., to producing one of the first guns made entirely from stainless steel. These days, the company’s extensive handgun lineup is composed mainly of double-action, swing-out-cylinder revolvers and polymer-frame, semi-automatic pistols using the Browning tilting-barrel locking system—pretty conventional by modern standards. Last year, however, S&W demonstrated that it’s still willing to try something new with the announcement of a patented operating system known as Tempo and two pistol models based around it, the M&P 5.7 and M&P 22 Magnum. The two handguns are chambered for cartridges that, until recently, have been somewhat uncommon in a semi-automatic pistol. After spending the first 25 years of its existence as an obscure, niche cartridge, the 5.7x28 mm FN has risen to prominence during the past five years, with a proliferation of both firearm and ammunition offerings. The M&P 5.7 marks S&W’s first foray into offering a firearm chambered for the cartridge.

Introduces Patented Drag Variability Reduction .

Hornady can finally announce—now that the patent has been granted—its Drag Variability Reduction Technology (DVRT) it has been harnessing since 2018. The cutting-edge bullet-tip design was developed using Doppler radar and Schlieren imagery and increases uniformity of bullet drag from shot to shot. The approach decreases dispersion at long range by optimizing bullet tip shape to provide excellent overall drag and unrivaled bullet-to-bullet consistency. Specifically, the meplat must be flat—not pointed—and the diameter of the flat meplat is a specific ratio to the bullet diameter. The new technology decreases the drag variation from shot to shot, resulting in less dispersion at long range. Development began in 2016, with a discovery on Doppler radar. During recordings of consecutive shot strings, an irregular drag curve was observed when the impact of one shot was significantly different than others in the group—the dreaded “flier.” Over the next year, testing continued to identify the cause of these errant shots across multiple bullet designs and manufacturers.

Defensive : Balancing Accuracy, Power & Speed.

When it comes to guns, everything is a tradeoff. With defensive handguns, that means balancing accuracy, power and speed. The USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) represents more than 37,000 members and more than 400 affiliated clubs. It’s the largest practical shooting association in the United States, and it’s the second largest region within IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation), which was founded in part by Jeff Copper. Collectively, IPSC and USPSA have provided a test bed for equipment and techniques, some of which are now standard for police and military training. There are three letters displayed on the USPSA logo—DVC—and they represent the foundational guide for both organizations.

James Reid’s "My Friend" Dusters.

Max Knight added a bit of lore in describing Reid’s Knuckle Dusters in his May 18, 1958 article in the Palladium-Item, in which he defined Reid’s Derringer Knuckle Duster “as a product of the riverboat days of the old Mississippi River. This … five shot repeater, with butt shaped in the form of a hand knuckle … gave the [riverboat] gambler fire power but also a hand weapon of defense.” Irish-born James Reid, an émigré from Glasgow, Scotland, landed on American shores in 1857 with his young family in tow. He didn’t arrive empty-handed; he had cash in his pocket and was an experienced machinist. First settling in New Jersey, the Reids soon moved to New York City. Somehow this Protestant Irishman foresaw a demand for pocket pistols. Did he see urban New Jersey or New York as so dangerous that they offered a market for his pistols? It was while living in New York City that Reid began his gun manufacturing business.
