It was our honor this morning to receive a generous donation in support of the creation of a Level 3 trauma center at Cape Cod Hospital from the The Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Fund and Big Nick's Ride for the Fallen. This donation was made in memory of Kevin Quinn, a US Marine Combat Veteran from Cape Cod who tragically lost his life six years ago when driving home from the hospital after his daughter had just been born.
State Representative Steve Xiarhos, President of the Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Fund, presented Cape Cod Healthcare President and CEO Michael Lauf with a check for $10,000. CCHC Director of Trauma and United States Navy veteran Dr. C. Jeff Siegert, and family and friends of the organizations joined the ceremony.
The establishment of a Level 3 trauma center at Cape Cod Healthcare is a crucial step toward ensuring that our community has access to the lifesaving care it needs. This new facility will provide immediate and specialized care for trauma patients, helping to prevent tragedies like the one that claimed the life of this beloved local hero.
"Supporting the creation of this trauma center is a way for us to honor the legacy of a brave Marine who served his country with distinction and to ensure that others in our community receive the critical care they need when it matters most," said Steven G. Xiarhos. "We are committed to making a positive impact in our community, and this donation is a reflection of our dedication to that mission."
“When we think about Level 3 trauma, there’s nothing more important in this community than being able to save someone’s life when you have an hour. The development of this trauma center at Cape Cod Hospital represents our commitment to the highest quality care for our community and visitors, providing critical access to specialized, lifesaving care close to home,” said Michael Lauf. “We extend our sincere gratitude to Representative Xiarhos, the Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Fund and Big Nick's Ride for the Fallen for their generous support of our mission to deliver the best possible care for our patients on Cape Cod, and for their dedication to serving our community.”
A local CCHC community blood drive was a fitting setting for the presentation, as the blood donor center at Cape Cod Hospital is named after Nicholas G. Xiarhos, a U.S. Marine Corporal and Dennis-Yarmouth High School graduate who was killed during combat in Afghanistan. The Xiarhos family has paid tribute to their fallen son by holding a blood drive for CCHC every year since his death in 2009, a vital and life-saving service to our local community.

– Boating safety is key when enjoying time on the water this summer. According to the U.S Coast Guard, 3,844 boating accidents occurred in 2023, resulting in 564 deaths and 2,126 injuries, with operator inexperience, operator inattention and improper lookout being the top three contributing factors.
Here are a few safe boating tips from our trauma team:
- Dress for Success
Even if you can swim, always wear a life jacket while on a boat.
- Use a Pre-Departure Checklist
A checklist is a helpful way to check the boat and ensure that proper gear is onboard.
- Know the Nautical Rules
Always be on the lookout for and respectful of buoys and other navigational aids.
- Develop a Float Plan
Always let someone know where you will be boating and when you plan on returning.
- Watch where you float
Turn the boat off when swimming and use caution when it is in idle.
- Don’t Drink and Drive
Drinking and driving a boat is illegal in every state.
- Take a Boating Class
Drivers should take a boating education course to keep passengers safe.
- Watch the Weather
Check the forecast before you go and keep an eye on the sky while boating. If you hear thunder, head for shore.
