Event Open to Everyone interested in the Geologic History of this Spectacular Site Hike through deep canyons on rugged trails to see and discuss the regional Mississippian-Pennsylvanian unconformity and some spectacular cross bedding and other depositional features and weathering features in the Mansfield sandstone. There is outstanding geomorphology related to the combination of long term erosion and more recent glacial melt water related erosion.

I'm happy to share the wonderful news that PhD student, Hem Sharma, has been selected as a recipient of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers Outstanding TA Award. This national award honors undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated excellence as Teaching Assistants.

Forwarded from the IGWS: We have two new open Geologist positions listed on the Survey’s website (link below). Both will be working on the 2-year Statewide Subsurface Energy Project (SSEP) that was awarded to IGWS by DOE and is set to start very soon.

The Survey will be conducting a statewide assessment of the potential for CO2 hub development in different regions of the state. IGWS will also be partnering with IU’s Center for Rural Engagement (CRE) and IUPUI’s Polis Center to work on the societal considerations of CO2 sequestration development in the state. Carbon sequestration is quickly becoming a topic of interest in Indiana where there is a concentration of GHG emitting industries.

It has been an outreach filled day us - kids from the IUPUI Center for Young Children came and checked rocks and made volcanoes under the guidance of Sammy, Thomas and Stuart. At the same time M.S. student, Moses Jatta and I went to talk to three classes of high school students at Southport High School about our adventures in the polar regions.

Congratulations to one of our recent PhD graduates, Dr. Igor Ogashawara (2021) for receiving the Emerging Leader Award in the 2023 GEO (Groups on Earth Observation) Ministerial Summit in Cape Town, South Africa. His PhD research was about remote sensing of inland water quality. After finishing his PhD, he started a postdoc in the Department of Experimental Limnology at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, Germany.
