Incoming O'Neill students at IU Indianapolis had an opportunity today to hear from the man behind one of the most popular mascots in the NFL: Blue from the Indianapolis Colts. Trey Mock shared his story of the importance of giving joy to others rather than focusing on what he was getting in his work and how that has helped fuel his successful career in the NFL. Chancellor Latha Ramchand also stopped in to visit with students and remind them of their mission to make a difference as O'Neill students.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a cherished member of our O’Neill School family. Dean Emeritus Dr. Charles “Chuck” Bonser passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.
Bonser was the O’Neill School’s founding dean and was instrumental in the development and success of the O’Neill School. After 10 years of service at Indiana University, Bonser planned and launched the new School of Public and Environmental Affairs in 1972. Bonser led the school as its dean for the next 17 years.
“Chuck leaves an unforgettable mark on the O’Neill School and the many who had the pleasure of calling him a professor, mentor, role model, and friend,” said O’Neill School Dean Siân Mooney. “We will ensure that his legacy endures for generations to come.”

Beyond the well-known attractions at the Indiana State Fair, there are hidden gems that truly make the experience unforgettable. 🌟 Take a stroll through the peaceful Purdue Extension Garden, where you can escape the crowds and enjoy beautiful greenery. Or step back in time at Hook’s Drug Store and soak in the nostalgic charm. These spots offer a unique glimpse into the fair’s rich history and scenery.

08/17/2024

A couple of tips from my S&S internship:

•Be the first to lend a hand - initiative goes a long way in this role.
•Use your vehicle to get around the fair during setups, but be mindful of tire pops.
•Arrive at least 20 mins early before clocking in for your shift; it gives you time to mentally prepare and start your shift strong.
•Stay hydrated throughout the days- a water bottle is an essential.
•Sunscreen is your best friend- apply and reapply sunscreen, or you might end up as tan as me.
•Take a moment to enjoy yourself - there’s a lot to take in so breathe.
•Build connections with your fellow interns, coordinators, and everyone else.
•If you see something, say something ✨
•Ask lots of questions more than you think you need to. It paints a bigger picture.

Adriana Molina-Garzón helps vulnerable communities face environmental challenges 08/12/2024

A new semester brings new faculty members to the O'Neill School, including Adriana Molina-Garzón. Molina-Garzón's work has taken her to remote communities across the world, all with the goal of researching climate change and environmental issues in vulnerable communities. Now, she's in Indianapolis, ready to continue her research and work with students in the classroom.
“I wanted to be part of an organization where I could contribute to making the world a better place by supporting the education of the next generation of leaders and promoting their interest in public service,” Molina-Garzón says. “I firmly believe the O’Neill at IU Indianapolis is a great place to achieve this.”

We're thrilled to welcome two new full-time faculty members to O'Neill in the fall semester. Sanghee Park and Adriana Molina-Garzón will join the public affairs side of O'Neill.
Dr. Park comes from the School of Public Service of Boise State University. Her work primarily focuses on social disparities in political and administrative outcomes with an emphasis on diversity and representation of policymaking entities.
Dr. Molina-Garzón previously worked in the School of Public Administration at University of New Mexico—Albuquerque. She works to understand the conditions impacting sustainable development in rural, vulnerable communities from low- and middle-income countries and the role nongovernmental agents play in the process.
Look for more on both of these faculty members on the O'Neill blog in the next few weeks.

Throughout our study abroad trip, we hiked through various forested areas, including the Chilamate Rainforest Eco-Retreat, the El Selva Research Station, and Manuel Antonio National Park. Whether a forest protected by incentives offered through payments for ecosystem services (PES) or through official national park status, the locations visited offered an opportunity to observe thriving ecosystems as a result of government programming and policy-making.
We also had the opportunity to visit La Mona Golosa for a tour of their widely-known chocolate farm. Heavily influenced by the connection between Mayan culture and cacao, the tour offered insights into the past, present, and future of chocolate.
Stay tuned as we visit a family-owned and -operated coffee farm tomorrow!

O’Neill launches new Community and Organizational Leadership Studies program 07/29/2024

The O'Neill School is launching a new degree program beginning in fall 2024. The Community and Organizational Leadership Studies program offers a bachelor’s degree, minor, and certificate option.
“This COLS program provides students with training that transcends job titles,” says O’Neill’s Suzann Lupton. “Being able to lead effectively is a critical skill that is applicable in every sector of our society.”
To help students learn those lessons, the COLS bachelor’s degree is adding seven new courses to O’Neill Indianapolis’ roster, plus an additional four classes for the minor.
Lecturer Liz Wager says offering a degree, minor, and certificate expands the program’s relevance and appeal, increasing options for students whether they are working on a new degree, returning to college to complete a degree, or advancing in their current career through a certificate. O’Neill and the Olympics: Student helps in creation of swim trials centerpiece 07/02/2024

From inside the Latinas Welding Guild, O’Neill Sustainability major Wendy Catalán Ruano helped recreate an icon of the 2024 Paris Olympic Summer Games: The Eiffel Tower. The Tower was the centerpiece of the Olympic Swim Trials in Indianapolis in June. But for Wendy and students at the Guild, it was much more than that.
“We wanted our students and graduates to be able to dream of the sorts of projects they could work on in the future,” Catalán Ruano says. “This project took them beyond learning to weld and really helped them see how welding can translate into a career.”
Wendy is working on her own career, one focused on combining sustainability and equity. Read more about Wendy's work and her future goals in this week's O'Neill blog.

Giving students the opportunity to get hands-on experience is critical. That's one reason our Investigating Post-Blast Crime Scenes course is so popular each year. During the class, cars are rigged with explosives and detonated. Student investigators then sift through debris to practice investigative skills and determine the cause and origin of each blast. Each case is taken from real-life blast investigations. Students wrap up by presenting their findings during the afternoon. We're very lucky to have retired IMPD Sgt. Steve Davis as a course instructor each year. His work with the IMPD Bomb Squad and other agencies helps make this course possible for our students.
