Everyone was so excited about our Medicinal Plants of the Week feature yesterday that I decided to go ahead and share our Native Plant of the Week today instead of waiting for Friday as I had originally planned. I am kicking off this series with Common Milkweed because nearly everyone knows how vital it is for monarch butterflies and I feel like it’s a bit of a gateway plant to other native plants. Now that we’re settling in to summer and you’re probably reaching a point where the planters are full and the vegetables garden is growing, you can start to focus on fun, beneficial, medicinal or native plants to add to your landscape. Starting this week we will begin featuring 1-2 medicinal plants and 1-2 native plants a week. All of our medicinal and native plants are grown locally and organically which is great for your and for your garden ecosystem. Now, on with the feature!

* Medicinal Uses: Known for migraine relief, anti-inflammatory effects, fever reduction, menstrual pain relief, and skin treatments.
* Active Compound: Parthenolide, which helps with inflammation and migraines.
* Side Effects: Not for those allergic to Asteraceae plants, pregnant, or breastfeeding.
* Growing: Thrives in well-drained soil, full sun to partial shade.

And yes, it's true that *sometimes* we run out later on Saturdays or Sundays, but we do our best to keep them in stock seven days a week. If you want to double check you can always call the shop and ask before heading over!

Enjoy Your Yard This Summer!

I love spending time in our yard but hate mosquitos and I am certain you do, too. I am always on the lookout for new products to help ease some of the summer itches and especially love natural and non-toxic products that work. Here are 3 things I use to repel mosquitos as summer ramps up.

🚫🦟 Mosquito-repelling outdoor garden incense sticks: Each stick is beautifully constructed with a bamboo core and a sawdust coat, and is naturally scented with a unique, light blend of steam-distilled essential oils. Once lit, sticks will provide protection from insects for 90 minutes and are easy to extinguish and relight.

🚫🦟 Mosquto Repelling Plants: We have plants 🪴 in stock that help repel mosquitoes. Those types of plants include citronella plants, lemongrass, and even basil! Personally I plant these types of plants in small pots and place them around my porch and patio where we enjoy the outside. I often mix them flowers or use bright pots to dress up the green plants.

Fresh Flower Friday + Summer & Garden Essentials at Stomping Ground

I created this pair of custom arrangements for a special graduation ceremony today. If you are celebrating a graduation 🧑‍🎓 this weekend we have lots of fresh flower bouquets and cards available. Or maybe you need to thank a teacher- we have cards and flowers 💐 for that, too!

Just a note about this holiday weekend, we will be closed Sunday & Monday so swing thru by Saturday for your graduation cards & gifts!

We got a new shipment of plants today! We got trellised Mandevilla which is stunning in pink and red. Also our jasmine is blooming again! It will keep blooms popping all summer that smell amazing. And then there’s the gorgeous hibiscus 🌺 and a Cheeto 🐈 in the impatiens. We love the tropical vibes and with this heat it feels like a tropical day! So swing by this week and get what you need to make your back yard, porch or patio a tropical paradise.

Have you watered your hanging baskets today? It’s a hot and sunny 🌞 day today. Don’t forget to water your hanging baskets deeply! It’s good to water them until water comes out the bottom. How often? Well, on hot days like today you may need to water your basket every day. Two quick ways to check if your basket needs watered:
1. How heavy or light is the basket? A light basket is in desperate need of water.
2. Stick your finger in the soil to the first knuckle. If it’s dry at your finger tip, it’s time to water! 💦

Gardening Q & A with Martha

I’d love to see you today at Stomping Ground! I’ll be in the shop all day today to help you pick out great flowers, herbs, veggies and natives and to answer all your gardening questions. A few of the most common questions we are getting right now are listed below!

A few common gardening questions we are hearing regularly:

Q: Do I have to water my plants or hanging basket if it rains?
A: It really depends on the location of your plants or hanging baskets. Almost without exception you WILL have to water your hanging baskets even if it rains. How do you know if it needs watered? Is it heavy or is it light weight? Light weight means it needs water? Can't tell? Then how does the soil feel if you stick your finger down to your first knuckle? If it's dry, you need to water. Be sure to water deeply. We hold the hose nozzle in the basket and count to about 20 or until water comes out the bottom of the basket. Annuals planted in the ground may need to be watered even if it rains. It takes at least an inch of rain a week to keep them happy. Annuals can get easily heat-stressed on hot days, so be sure to water regularly!

Q: Is it too late to plant tomatoes & peppers?
A: Definitely not! Now is THE time to plant. We have a wide variety of both available as well as other vegetables. Check out our full list of tomato and pepper options below.

Q: Can I plant seeds right now or is it too late?
A: You can absolutely plant seeds outside right now! We have flower seeds which are meant to be planted right around now. It isn't too late for planting flowers from seeds. If you aren't sure, be sure to ask us and we will be happy to advise. If you already have some seeds check the packet for the "days to bloom" number which is usually 60-75 days. Consider if it takes 60 days from now to bloom then you will have flowers in mid-July. Seems like a perfect time for bright blooming flowers to me!

Short & Sweet Sunday - Gardening Q & A with Martha & Mosquito Repelling Plants

It’s nearly summer which means after the rain, comes the 🦟 mosquitos! The good news is we have plants 🪴 in stock that help repel mosquitoes. Those types of plants include citronella plants, lemongrass, lavender and even basil! Personally I plant these types of plants in small pots and place them around my porch and patio where we enjoy the outside. I often mix them flowers or use bright pots, too. We also have new mosquito repelling stickers safe for the whole family and a favorite from last year, the Mosquito Repelling Incense Sticks are back. IYKYK- these sticks are awesome! Come see us Saturday 11-6 or Sunday 12-5!

Not the prettiest pictures because I unloaded the whole plant delivery in the rain and then I had to unwrap all those baskets also in the rain and by the time I was done I was soaked to the bone and I forgot to take a photo worthy of posting but this is me here to tell you that we are restocked after a totally wild Mother’s Day weekend and we are ready for you this weekend. No it definitely isn’t too late to plant anything so come and see us between the raindrops this week. We can’t wait for you to see everything new!
