The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) is a non-profit organization that provides social services, educational and vocational support to the Burmese in greater Indianapolis. The BACI also support community members regionally, nationally, and globally through collaborative initiatives, strategic partnerships, and advocacy.
We are delighted to have kick-started the Upward College Program for high school students yesterday with one of the highest enrollments yet hosted at Perry Meridian High School. In partnership with parents and our partners, we are excited and looking forward to learning and growing together with our schoolers.
BACI Upward College Program is an afterschool program designed to support area high school students with their college readiness and future success with comprehensive and innovative program design.

Nearly 100 parents attended parent orientation for the Upward College Program 2024-2025 Academic Year designed to support high school students with their college prep and endless future success. We look forward to closely working with each of the parents to ensure the success of our children.

Congratulations to all scholars and youths on completing their programs successfully. About 150 students including college students, high school students and middle school students completed their respective programs this summer with BACI.
The first day of 4th Annual Myanmar Research Presentation successfully concluded. Over 90 researchers from the BACI’s Center for Research, Policy and Innovation (CRPI) -- coming from around the world, representing 15 Higher Educational Institutions and 11 countries -- will present their research findings and solution-oriented policy action recommendations to help address some of the most pressing issues facing Myanmar and the region as the culmination of the intensive research project this summer on the 30 research topics.
This hybrid event is being hosted by the BACI Myanmar Initiative August 15 - 17, at 8:30 AM.

A study by a group of researchers at the 2024 Upward College Summer Scholars Program found that the College Persistence rate has increased 96.9% among Burmese American students this year.
Researchers include Tuchin Par (Research Leader) and scholars: Peter Hing, Ophe Lie, Kai Rem, Nichole Siang and Joseph Thawng.
At this hybrid event, researchers from CRPI will present their research findings and solution-oriented policy action recommendations for stakeholders as the culmination of the intensive research project in summer 2024 as per the schedule given on the flyer.

Congratulations to Daw Naing Long, our newest home-based Childcare Center owner in our community!
Daw Naing Long, a teacher and a woman leader, will now be able to support herself and her family financially with dignity through a childcare service. But she will also be giving back to the community by providing age developmental high quality culturally and linguistically appropriate early learning education to many of our children while at the same time, the mothers and parents of those children being taking care will now be actively participating in the workforce where by contributing to the economic activities and the economy growth in our state and our nation.
“Childcare is important not only for our children and families, but also for our community, our people and our nation building”, said Executive Director Mr. Elaisa Vahnie.
Childcare licensure program with a scholarship has been implemented by BACI since 2011 through its EMED’s Small Enterprise and Economic Development Program (SEED).

The Education and Leadership Tour as part of the Upward College Summer Scholars Program provides the opportunity for the youth leaders to expose and learn deeper about how the US Government and the Congress function while appreciating the rich history of the American, its freedom and democracy.
Researchers from the Upward College Summer Scholars Program 2024, under the BACI’s Center for Research, Policy, and Innovation (CRPI – USA) will present their research findings and solution oriented policy action recommendations for stakeholders as the culmination of a 10-week intensive scientific PAR research project in the course of summer 2024 as per the schedule given in the flyer.
This year’s topics of research include:
1. College Going Rate Among Burmese-American Students
2. College Persistence Among Burmese-American Students
3. Community Political Participation: Community Status and Strength and Barriers
4. Global Climate Change: Community Awareness and Actions
5. Mental Health: Community's Status on Health and Awareness
6. Social Issue: Parenting Style and shifts in Family Dynamic
7. U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program and Secondary Migration: study of refugee's history, migration processes and migratory patterns and population.

First Welcome Corps Sponsoree has just arrived in Indianapolis!
Columbam, the first new arrival under the BACI Welcome Corps sponsorship program has just arrived in Indianapolis early this morning from Malaysia.
The journey that Columban took is not short nor easy. But we are incredibly happy for Columbam and his sister as they are now reunited after over 10 years of separation.
BACI as a Private Sponsor Organization (PSO) supports and oversees the Private Sponsor Groups (PSGs) who are sponsoring refugees and asylum seekers as newcomers through the Welcome Corps. We are excited and looking forward to welcoming many more refugees and families who have been awaiting in unsafe conditions for many years to resettle in the USA and start a new life in this land of freedom and opportunity.
