Indiana Governor's Council for People with Disabilities
Welcome to Indiana's Developmental Disabilities Council!
The Council is consumer-driven and is charged with determining how the service delivery system in both the public and private sectors can be most responsive to people with disabilities. The Council receives and disseminates federal funds to support innovative programs that are visionary, influence public policy, empower individuals and families and advocate systems change. Board members of the Council are appointed by the Governor and 60% must be people with disabilities or their family members.

Do you think having pride in your disability is possible? Is your disability an important part of your identity? Are there barriers to feeling positively about your disability? We want to know! Check out our writing prompts in the form below. We will be publishing responses on our website, newsletter, and social media pages.
There are no right or wrong answers. Your voice matters, and we hope you will consider this an opportunity to contribute to a larger conversation about disability identity, affirmation, acceptance, and solidarity.

It's Disability Pride Month!
Created in 2019 by Ann Magill, the Disability Pride Flag's multi-colored stripes represent various forms of disability.
🟢 Green: deafness, blindness, and other sensory disabilities.
🔵 Blue: psychiatric disabilities and mental illness.
⚪️ White: non-apparent, invisible, and undiagnosed disabilities.
🟡 Gold: neurodivergence and cognitive and intellectual disabilities.
🔴 Red: physical disabilities.
These color categories are not conclusive nor mutually exclusive. They serve as a starting point, acknowledging that disability exists on a spectrum of both distinct and interconnected experiences. The Disability Pride Flag is a tribute to the diversity across the disability community and a reminder of what unites us.

June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate love, diversity, and the LGBTQIA+ community. The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) proudly joins this celebration, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and acceptance for all.
Pride Month highlights the ongoing fight for equality and the right to live authentically. We at NACDD are committed to fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or disabilities, can live their best lives. We emphasize that the voices and experiences of individuals with developmental disabilities are crucial within the LGBTQIA+ community, and celebrate these individuals and their contributions, recognizing their strength and resilience.
As we commemorate Pride Month, let us reaffirm our commitment to equity and respect for all. Together, we can create a future that embraces diversity and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to live a life of dignity and opportunity.
Happy Pride Month from the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities!

April is . Autism is a developmental disability that affects how autistic people experience the world around them. Some autistic people do not speak, but all autistic people have something important to say!
In our posts, we will follow the lead of The Autistic Self Advocacy Network and say "autistic person" (identity-first language) instead of "person with autism" (person-first language). Some autistic people may prefer to call themselves a person with autism, and that's okay too! You should always use the language of the person you are talking about or with.

"In a recent study completed by DSRP, young adults with Down syndrome told us that they liked being their own person, had high aspirations and a zest for life; they disliked being treated differently from others in the general community and were aware of their limitations. Young adults are indeed living lives of meaning and purpose, though in very different ways, with varying forms of support to enable them to flourish."
