to when Bobo Smalls threw the first pitch during ICRC’s Negro Leagues Night with the Indianapolis Indians in 2018. Smalls spent over 20 years with the Indianapolis Clowns and passed away in 2019. His legacy, however, lives on in the hearts of many fans and players who were inspired by his dedication and talent.
Bobo Smalls was more than just a player; he was a mentor, a friend, and a symbol of perseverance for ICRC. His contributions to the sport and to the community are fondly remembered, and his impact continues to be felt.
Today on Juneteenth, the 11th federal holiday recognized by the US government, we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. We will continue the conversation as we progress toward equal opportunity and justice for all in central Indiana and nationwide.
We look forward to hosting Negro Leagues Night this Saturday at Victory Field, where we will remember stars like Oscar Charleston, Hank Aaron, Toni Stone and others who grew up in an era where baseball and everyday life experiences were segregated. It is a privilege to honor those who persevered, paving the way for today and tomorrow's generations to enjoy the game and life we all love.
