Metropolitan Youth Orchestra

MYO is a youth and family development program of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. This page is managed by the Learning Community of the ISO.

The program is designed to use the life skills learned in music instruction to engage youth in activities that discourage at-risk behaviors and keep them committed to staying in school.

Meet our Musicians đŸŽ¶

Sharif Ibrahim is the first MYO graduate to play with the ISO professionally! Sharif started playing the double bass in 6th grade, and took lessons in high school—with fellow ISO musician, Robert Goodlett.

Sharif shared with us that, "I became hooked. I am still drawn towards the massive palette of sounds, colors, harmonies, and rhythms that exist within orchestral and instrumental music, and I consider the genre to be my ultimate inspiration."

"We have been involved with MYO for four years. My daughter first learned to play the viola through school and was greatly enriched through the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. My daughter has been delighted showing me everything she has learned from MYO and plays for me and our whole family regularly. My daughter's name is Kristina, she is now 16 years old and a Junior in high school. I wish I had known about MYO when my kids were much younger. The positive impact has not only affected Kristina and me, but it has had such a positive snowball effect for the family." -Karla Banks, MYO Parent
