For most photographers, the colors of this season beckon as summer fades with each passing day. I am one of those who feel almost greedy to capture the colors of changing foliage and glorious cloudy skies. (Bonus when horses and their people are involved.)
I have a feeling that the beauty of autumn will be short lived this year. If you’re thinking of having portraits made I invite you to act now. I have a few days open in October and early November for horse and rider sessions.

I’ve been feeling the blues a bit lately. The last three months have been rather challenging for me. But when I read about this honorable mention my mood got a reset. 😊 Hooray for silver linings AND horse crazy girls!

Horses at war. They don’t know why no trainings and no long walks in paddock. They miss people as they are school horses and used to have many around. First week of war we reduced food portions to save hay and oats. Now more than 30 sponsors donated to support us so we returned back full portion. We bought supplies to stock all free space in the stable and we continue buying to have enough. Many thanks to all helping people in Ukraine and abroad.
We do not evacuate horses from Kyiv, hippodrome. City is protected. And our stuff also can’t leave due to personal reasons.
We hope to come back to work once peace comes. We believe in our army and the victory of democracy and freedom!

True confessions :
Digital single lens reflex cameras had replaced film cameras in professional photography by the mid 2000’s and I was mad. I loved celluloid film in all its glorious formats. I had just emerged from a long term apprenticeship in which I learned to overcome the barriers to entering the rarified field of advertising photography. Suddenly that system did not matter and seemingly overnight, the profession had a newly leveled playing field. I also loved working in the darkroom. I worried that the beauty of a printed photograph would be lost forever without those silver halide molecules in the process. I hated what was happening to my little artlife bubble. My crystalline vision of my career trajectory became very unclear. Adding insult to (perceived) injury, suddenly anyone with a good eye and some pro equipment could take an accelerated track to becoming my competition. I was troubled by the idea that my years spent learning the craft were a huge waste of time.

But none of that mattered when I began to feel the pressure from my best commercial clients who demanded the new, ultra convenient format.
Grieving a little, I decided to buy a digital SLR camera and learn the new things. It wasn’t love at first sight, but as I upgraded my gear over the years, I’ve learned to appreciate the incredible versatility of the technology. I still marvel at it sometimes….even now, after fifteen years of immersion.

Today I am happily sitting with this image of a horse-crazy teenager with her first true love, captured and processed digitally. The medium gives a million artistic choices for every image and I have a process for whittling down to what I think is best. In this case, I became enamored with the brilliant color rendering of magenta and chartreuse. I spent a while fussing with the saturation levels and tonal values and then I realized this image might be really beautiful in Black & White.

It may or may not be my artistic superpower, but I certainly do obsess over every image I create. Nowadays, I think it’s pretty neat that I can make spectacular prints in color and B&W from one digital negative. And yet, I cannot decide which of these is my favorite.
