How you store produce matters! Apples, tomatoes, citrus fruits, and bananas should be kept separate from other produce to prevent speedy ripening. To prevent potato sprouting, keep potatoes and onions separate, and place an apple with potatoes. Learn more tips at https://table2table.org/keep-your-food-fresh-longer/.
Fun fact: "Container glass is 100% recyclable, can be recycled endlessly, and is a primary ingredient in fiberglass insulation and new glass containers."

⚠️ Don't throw batteries in the trash! ⚠️
Batteries in the trash lead to landfill fires. Some gadgets might not look like batteries, but batteries inside those devices are what power them. Properly dispose of those batteries at any local drop-off location listed at www.icgov.org/hhm. If you have electronics that need to be recycled, visit www.icgov.org/recycle for more info.
Got used motor oil? Johnson County, Kalona, and Riverside residents can recycle it via City oil recycling programs at no cost. Leave sealed, labeled containers (must be less than 5-gallon size) in the Oil Recycling Sheds at either location:

You can save food for months – like hitting a “pause” button on it – by freezing or canning, and it just might surprise you how many different types of food can be preserved for long periods of time. Table to Table

A reminder that Styrofoam is not recyclable ❌ and should be placed in the regular trash.
Keeping non-recyclable items like Styrofoam out of recycling helps to keep recycling loads clean and ensures they get successfully recycled!
Fun fact: "Recycling just one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. (Imagine how long it would light an LED!)"

What plastic items can you recycle via City programs?
Because plastic items have complicated, varying chemistries, it is important to only place accepted, recyclable plastic items in your residential curbside recycling cart or at drop-off recycling locations to reduce recycling contamination. (More info: www.icgov.org/recycle)
