In 1900, thousands of square miles of desert near the Mexico border was purchased by a man named Rockwood. He dreamed of diverting water from the Colorado River to support small family farms.

People called him crazy and overly ambitious.
They said the water was too far, and too muddy to be of use.
That no crops could ever survive in such scarcity.

And then, the river proved them both wrong.

The Colorado left its banks and overflowed into the valley.
The dry, sandy lakebed was below sea level, and once the river started flowing into the basin, there was danger that it would never stop.

Rockwood thought his problem was not enough water.
In reality, he had more than he ever needed.

Rockwood didn’t live to see the fruit of his vision. But today, the Imperial Valley of California is the most productive cropland in North America. And some of the food you ate today likely came from fields that were once called a wasteland.

It can feel like we live in a time of spiritual dryness.
Like the things of God are scarce, and that His power and resources are in short supply.

The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy.
He wants us living in scarcity.
He wants us to believe that our access to God’s Spirit is limited.
That this is all there is and ever will be.
He wants us living in the desert.

But Jesus said that we would have life more abundantly.
That we would do greater works than He.
And that we are to live lives of overflowing.
A place where there are no limits to what he can do.
An atmosphere that cultivates growth and revival.
Full of him.
Spilling out to others.
Bursting at the seams with his presence.

Living in the Overflow.
