A quick lesson about autoimmune diseases. It takes an average of 3 years and 5 doctors for a person to get a proper diagnosis of an autoimmune disease. I just wish more people understood what an autoimmune disease is. It is not a cold or the flu. Medications that treat these include malaria medications, cancer medications, steroids, and biologics, to name a few, and these have their side effects on their own. Just eating a salad and hitting the gym won’t slim your face or get the pounds off. Sleeping 10 hours doesn’t leave you well rested, ever. Last minute changes in plans because of that “just got run over” feeling. Achy joints and bones, dry skin, breaking hair, mood swings, and depression are just the tip of the iceberg. You are also prone to having multiple autoimmune diseases. The “put together on the outside,” rarely matches the raging battle on the inside.

I am watching the ones who will take the time to read this entire post and react.

As a Black woman, I had to beg doctors to take me seriously when my brain was leaking Why was it so difficult to find a doctor that would take a moment to hear me? I always felt like I was fighting for the attention of every doctor I saw. And to be honest, as a Black woman I’ve always feared doctors.

Hundreds of thousands of Black children who lost a parent could be missing out on Social Security payments 05/26/2023

"Hundreds of thousands of Black children who lost a parent could be missing out on Social Security payments" | CBS News - Politics | 05/23/2023

EXCERPT: After Dr. Sarah Williams lost her husband Clarence to lung cancer in 2015, her grief was soon accompanied by financial worries about providing for their 9-year-old twins.

Affording basics like school supplies and field trips strained Williams' part-time professor salary in North Carolina for more than a year. Eventually she discovered her twins were eligible for federal survivor payments from the Social Security Administration (SSA) for children who lose a parent. Both children soon started receiving payments of hundreds of dollars a month, helping to alleviate the financial burden that came with their father's death.

But many Black children who lose a parent never see benefits like those that helped Williams' family, a problem that has drawn the attention of advocates and lawmakers who say the SSA should be doing more to close the racial gap that exists among children who receive benefits and those who don't.

There are approximately 10.1 million Black children nationwide, and Census data reveals an alarming 9.6% of them, or about 975,000, had lost at least one parent as of 2021. That figure has doubled in the past decade, with a sharp increase due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One study found that Black children lost caregivers at twice the rate of White children from April 2020 until the end of 2022.

Recent Social Security data shows that only about 26% of Black children who have lost a parent — 257,533 — are receiving survivor benefits, according to the analysis by David Weaver, a former Social Security Administration executive and researcher. The comparable percentage for non-Black children is 46%. Roughly 30,000 fewer Black children are receiving survivor benefits than in 2009, the last time the data was broken down by race.

Hundreds of thousands of Black children who lost a parent could be missing out on Social Security payments Data shows that only about 26% of Black children who have lost a parent are receiving survivor benefits, a rate much lower than other racial groups.

The School Pizza Recipe- Don't Lose This Recipe 😋
Ingredients
Crust:
2-2/3 cup flour
3/4 cup powdered milk
2 T sugar
1 package quick rise yeast
1 tsp salt
1-2/3 cup warm water (110-115)
2 T vegetable oil
Filling:
1/2 lb Italian sausage
1/2 lb ground chuck
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1 (8oz) block mozzarella cheese
Sauce (I make the day before):
1 (6oz) can tomato paste
1 1/2 cups water
1/3 cup olive oil
2 cloves garlic minced
1 t salt
1 tsp pepper
1/2 T dried oregano
1/2 T dried basil
1/2 t dried rosemary
Steps
Crust:
Preheat oven to 475.
Spray 18 x 13 sheet pan with Pam and lay parchment paper down.
Add flour, powered milk, sugar, yeast, and salt to a large bowl. Whisk to blend.
Add oil to warm water. Pour into flour mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until batter forms. Don’t worry about lumps - you just want no dry spots.
Spread dough onto sheet pan with fingertips until even. If the dough doesn’t want to cooperate then let it rest for 5 min and try again.
Bake just the crust for 8-10 min. Remove from oven and set aside.
filling:
Brown meats (add salt and pepper) until it resembles crumbles. Drain, set aside.
Get out sauce.
To partially baked crust assemble:
Spread sauce all over crust.
Sprinkle meats.
Sprinkle cheese.
Bake at 475 for 8-10 min. Until cheese starts to brown.
Let stand 5 min, cut into slices and serve.

Under Half of Rural Hospitals Offer Labor and Delivery Services 05/11/2023

"Under Half of Rural Hospitals Offer Labor and Delivery Services, Putting Rural Moms at Risk, Report Says" | The Daily Yonder - Keep It Rural | 05/09/2023

EXCERPT: "Less than half of the rural hospitals in America offer labor and delivery services, contributing to a range of problems that can endanger the health and lives of rural mothers and newborns.

According to a report from the Center for Healthcare Quality & Payment Reform (CHQPR), 46% of rural hospitals across the country offer labor and delivery services. Nearly 200 rural hospitals have stopped delivering babies altogether over the past 10 years, primarily to cut costs.

Closing maternity services may save money for the hospital, the report says, but it puts women at higher risk of mortality, said Harold Miller, president and CEO of CHQPR. The causes of this higher risk stem from the additional time it takes to get to obstetric services, less access to prenatal care, and the potential for pre- or post-natal complications to turn into emergencies.

In communities where women have no local maternity care, driving to the nearest obstetrics unit puts the mother’s life at risk. While women in urban areas can reach a hospital with maternity services in under 20 minutes, the study found, women in rural areas are likely to be traveling 30 minutes or more. In 40% of rural communities without maternity care, women have to drive more than 40 minutes to reach those services."

Under Half of Rural Hospitals Offer Labor and Delivery Services Rural hospitals have cut maternity services to save costs. Low compensation from private insurance companies is is one of the causes.
