March 8 is International Women’s Day. Today, people around the world are observing this annual celebration of women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements throughout centuries.
March is National Women’s History Month. Celebrate, honor, and acknowledge the powerful contributions of women throughout centuries all month long. May the stories of influential women inspire you to be the change.
Women Writing for (a) Change Jacksonville will partner with Tyla C., a UNF student, to co-host a FREE 4-part writing circle series in the UNF Women’s Center Lounge (2/2100) every Wednesday in February (2.7, 2.14, 2.21, & 2.28) from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Dr. Tru Leverette Hall will facilitate each in-person writing circle. The topic for the spring series centers on “Delving Deeper into Self” and discovering who you are at this stage of life. Everyone is encouraged to participate, though there is a focus on speaking to the experiences of those who identify as women. Women Writing for (a) Change is a local writers’ community that hosts events where the voices of writers are amplified and celebrated. Registration is requested. Link in Bio LinkTree.
Need a change of scenery to study or a chill place to rest in between classes? Stop by The Lounge in Building 2, Suite 2100. You will also find the Nursing Nest in the same suite. The Nursing Nest is a private space created to meet the nursing and lactation needs of students, faculty and staff. Bonus: use of the Nursing Nest provides access to a sink for rinsing pump parts (see front desk for assistance). 💜 Stop by and check out whichever space(s) you may need whenever you are in the area.
Happy First Day of the spring 2024 semester! 💜 Have a great day!
Happy Holidays! Have a safe and joyous winter break. 💜
Every year, we recognize Equal Pay Day, a symbolic day focused on highlighting the gender pay gap that still exists. This date conveys how far into the year the average woman must work to have earned the equivalency of what an average man earned the previous year.; this date can also vary based upon the woman's demographic background. This year, Latina Equal Pay Day falls on October 5 and specifically symbolizes how far Hispanic and Latin American women must work to have earned the the equivalency of what an average male earned in 2022. For Latinas, this pay gap is on average 52 cents per $1 earned. Today, we honor Latina women and seek to raise awareness around the continued need to address gender pay discrepancies for all.
October marks the official observance of two significant awareness months: Breast Cancer Awareness and Domestic Violence Awareness. The Women's Center encourages everyone to continue to educate themselves around how both breast cancer and domestic violence impact the world around us.
