Academy Baptist Church

Our Story

Over two centuries ago, a man named Jared Cunningham came to Georgia and settled at a place called Yam-tra-hoochee, an Indian appellation, on the Etoho River. This is now known as Hurricane Shoals onthe North Oconee River.

At that time, there were a number of Native Americans roaming the forests of North Georgia. Brother Cunningham had become accustomed to dealing with the Natives. He later moved to the Ithlobee River, now known as the Middle Oconee, and settled near another old Native American encampment. aS his previous settlement near Hurricane Shoals, he had belonged to Oconee Baptist Church. It was only natural for him to talk up a new church where he had relocated. Hence, he established Academy Baptist Church.

As you probably know, it takes a lot of water to run a Baptist church. So, the original Academy building was erected near the river and three bold springs. The church house was arranged for the accommodation of African American slaves who had a section to themselves.

There is some discrepancy as to the exact year Academy was established. Some records say it was constituted in 1820, but other records state that Academy was established in1812. Unfortunately, the records have been misplaced and some may have been destroyed by fire. The first pastor of Academy was Rev. Drury Hutchins who lead the dedication of the church. He served as pastor for a number of years.
