Meet alumnus Joshua Carter ('99, EdD '19)! 🎓
Josh is a 1999 graduate. During his time at Milligan, he was an active member of the golf team and pursued a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in History. From a young age, Josh always knew he wanted to go to Milligan. He holds its missions and values dear to his heart. Milligan roots run deep in the Carter family with his father, Donnie Carter ('74), and sister, Brianna (Carter '97) Loran, also being graduates. In addition, Josh's mother, Betty Carter, worked in the admissions office during the 1990s and early 2000s.
At the age of 21, fresh out of college, Josh was offered a job teaching English at Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee, where he would also coach baseball and golf. Inspired by his father, it was always his dream to teach and coach. Josh continued to better himself by completing a Master of Educational Administration and Supervision (2008) and Master of Educational Specialist in Curriculum and Instruction (2010) from Lincoln Memorial University. In 2009, Josh was awarded Science Hill Teacher of the Year. Little did Josh know that God had more plans for him in the education field.
In 2012, Josh became one of Science Hill's assistant principals, something he never thought he would do. A few years after he became an assistant principal, God led Josh back to Milligan to be part of the first cohort of graduates from Milligan's Doctor of Education program in 2019. Josh became Science Hill's principal in 2021, where he continues his incredible 25+ year career in this school system.
Throughout Josh's career in education, he has been blessed to build relationships with countless students and positively impact their lives. "I still keep up with the students - it's so rewarding to see what they've gone to do," says Josh. "During my time at Milligan, I had great mentors and professors, like Drs. Lee ('69) and Pat (Phillips '69) Magness and Coach (Rich) Aubrey ('85, MEd '93), who modeled the teacher and leader I wanted to strive to be."
Josh now resides in Gray, Tennessee with his wife, Jennifer, of 22 years and children Maddie (12) and Jack (9).

What a great way to end the semester in Foundations in Elementary and Secondary Education with student presentations - Leaders in Education.
Recently Dr. Edwards hosted members of our second-year doctoral cohort for a "mystery dinner." The menu, while a mystery, allowed students to rank items of recent and upcoming accomplishment. The event modeled elements of culture and celebration for these current and future instructional leaders.
Dr. Tara Cosco and her co-presenter, Dr. Greg Matthias shared some teaching strategies they are writing in their book set for publication December 2024 at the Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) Convo in St. Louis, Missouri this past Friday. Dr. Cosco says, "KDP has been instrumental in her career from providing continual professional development, networking and publication opportunities, and friendships that have spanned over 20 years! She is grateful for the entire team at KDP who support educators in all their academic endeavors. " Dr. Cosco hopes students will consider joining KDP during their time at Milligan University and enjoy the many benefits and opportunities the honor society provides.
KDP Convo was outstanding! The convention team provided amazing presenters and fabulous connections! Dr. Cosco met Samantha Fecich, an author and professor who also hosts a podcast for educators. Samantha Fecich plans to interview Dr. Cosco about best practices in the classroom. She also met Dr. Lu during their awards banquet and discussed collaborating on future projects.
When the conference sessions ended there was time to explore the St. Louis arch, and the free museum. The walk to dinner provided a view of the St. Louis Cardinals' stadium and a horse-drawn carriage.
We thank Elizabethton City Schools for hosting a Milligan education class at the Central Office. It was a great experience for students to meet with the Central Office Administration.
