JOHNSON CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES SPELL-A-BRATION 2024

The Johnson City Public Schools Foundation (JCPSF) announced its annual fundraising event, SPELL-A-BRATION 2024. This will be the 4th annual fun event which raises funds for special projects not funded by the regular school budget. SPELL-A-BRATION 2024 will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at 6PM in the Science Hill High School Gymnasium.

“Remember the annual spelling bee when you were in school? This event is less stressful and much more fun with teams of four (4) adults working together to correctly spell words on a white board,” said JCPSF President Tembra Aldridge. “Teams come up with creative names, themes and costumes. Your registration fee goes to a worthy cause helping our schools and students. All the while, you and your friends have a great evening of fun competition and laughter.”

Area companies can help sponsor the event which offers new benefits in 2024. “We want our event sponsors to receive a positive impact from their investment in supporting SPELL-A-BRATION,” Aldridge said. “This year, sponsors will receive tremendous exposure before, and during the event.” Information about sponsorships is available online at jcschools.org/Foundation.

Beyond sponsorships, registration is now open to anyone interested in forming a spelling team by going to jcschools.org/Foundation or the Johnson City Public Schools Foundation page.

For 2024, all proceeds from SPELL-A-BRATION 2024 will fund ViewSonic Smart TV systems at schools across the Johnson City School System. These Smart TV systems truly help our teachers with their class lessons, but due to the cost, the school system has been limited as to the number of ViewSonic Smart TV units each school can have.

“As a teacher, my ViewSonic Smart TV has revolutionized my classroom, offering an array of benefits for both me and my students,” noted Digital Media Teacher and JCS Teacher Leader Stephanie Elliott. “The interactive display empowers me to deliver dynamic lessons, integrating multimedia content and engaging apps seamlessly and effectively, fostering active participation and collaboration. Students benefit from immersive content delivery and interactive lessons, promoting deeper understanding and retention of material, making every lesson and student presentation memorable and impactful.”

With SPELL-A-BRATION 2024, the JCPSF can provide a number of ViewSonic Smart TV units to multiple schools in Johnson City.

Past Special Projects funded by the JCPSF:

2024: Indian Trail Middle School Digital Communications Lab
2023: Liberty Bell Middle School Digital Communications Lab
2019: Science Hill AV Studio
2018: Steam Bus

Introducing Peggy Voitlein, board member since 2015....

THE JCPSF Announces its 2023-2024 Grants Program

The Johnson City Public School Foundation announced it has opened applications for its 2023-2024 Grants Program. Teachers in the Johnson City School System can apply for grants to fund their projects but must have their written applications into the Central Office by October 16, 2023.

Last Spring alone, the JCPSF awarded over $31,700 to deserving projects in the Johnson City School System. “Teachers have presented some incredible projects for which we were able to provide funding over the years,” said Tembra Aldridge, president of the JCPSF. “Those projects then have amazing results for our students in the Johnson City School System.”

For the 2023-2024 school year, the decision was made to do the Grant Program in the Fall as school was beginning. This will give teachers the opportunity to implement their projects sooner rather than wait until the next school year. Watch our page as we visit past grant recipients to learn of the impact of their projects. It is an exciting time in the Johnson City School System!

We have got some big news coming soon. Here’s a hint: look at all those photos, all these grants given out last Spring. Watch our page in the next week for our news for the 2023-2024 school year!

STEAM BUS - A Community Project

The Foundation was established in 1989 to enrich public education in Johnson City Schools. Over the years, this has been done in a variety of ways. The Foundation acts as a non-profit channel by which scholarships and awards can be given to SHHS students on behalf of private citizens and other organizations. In addition, the Foundation has awarded $40,000 in teacher grants in the past two year.

Beginning in Fall, 2017, the Foundation committed to a big project: retrofitting a retired school bus with the latest in technology and modules of lessons in the STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math). This STEAM Bus project has received widespread community support. Almost $63,000 has been raised thru business, industry, and private donations. In addition, the Foundation raised $12,000 with an adult spelling bee fundraiser, “SPELL-A-BRATION,” in April.

The STEAM Bus project has become a real partnership with stakeholders throughout the community. Johnson City Schools Supervisor Dr. David Timbs, the “idea man” for this project, is coordinating the school system’s part of the project. A cohort of ten teachers was selected to design ten modules of lessons for the STEAM Bus. These lessons are organized within the STEAM subject areas with catchy names like: Roller Coaster Engineering, Stop Motion Videos, and Who Did It? Forensics. The bus will spend 3-4 weeks at each Johnson City elementary school, and 3rd and 4th grade students will be targeted for the lessons

Businesses have partnered with the Foundation to fund the STEAM Bus through generous donations. The names of companies who have supported this project will have their logos
