What is our 2024 show about?
John Donne said, “No man is an island.”
Being part of a community – whether it is a family or a group of friends, your neighborhood, or communities of mutual interests or activities - is about developing stronger social bonds that can improve a person's health, happiness, and overall quality of life.
Human beings should not live in isolation, alone and surrounded by the sea. People are meant to be interconnected.
Today, it is possible to exist with very little human contact or interaction. We can get our groceries on Instacart, household goods from Amazon, entertainment from Netflix, and fast food from DoorDash. We can do our activism on social media and keep in touch with our loved ones through texting. Even hearing another person’s voice is becoming diminished.
The pandemic has accelerated this state of isolationism: quarantine, telehealth, zoom, remote learning. Cell phones, ear buds, etc. have contributed to people not even making eye contact with others anymore.
Mental well-being concerns are exponentially high. Many deal with depression, anxiety, apathy, and the feeling of being lost.
How do we move forward? Although we have to prioritize our own physical and mental health, we have to also turn our focus to other people. Genuine caring, empathy, wanting to help, wanting to make the world a better place, these are the first steps. We need to be bold enough to make eye contact, to smile, and to give genuine compliments to others.
One of the purposes of the Marching Bucs is to spread happiness through our performances as well as giving people a short reprieve from their stress and cares. We cannot give to others what we ourselves do not possess. This year is unique in that we have the opportunity to connect with millions of people through our television appearance at the 2024 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Thanksgiving is known to many as a time for gathering with family, loved ones, and friends. Our show reveal video begins, "We all need...." A series of words follow describing things we desire and need. The final need is, "each other." We want to celebrate the joy of simply being with ones we love and the happiness that brings. We want to remind everyone that often our happiness can be elevated by simply being connected with other people.
