KU School of Nursing researcher receives HRSA grant to improve maternal and neonatal health in rural Kansas 09/12/2024

KU Medical Center has been awarded a four-year, nearly $4 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to improve pregnancy and birth outcomes in rural Kansas.

Karen Weis, Ph.D., Christine A. Hartley Rural Health Nursing Endowed Professor at KU School of Nursing-Salina and director of research at the Kansas Center for Rural Health, is the principal investigator on the HRSA grant.

“Because Kansas is very rural, access to obstetrical care is a really pressing issue," she said. "And some critical access hospitals (typically rural hospitals with no more than 25 beds) are either closing entirely or closing their obstetrical care, and it’s creating an issue with access to maternal health care."

The grant will fund the creation of a sustainable model of obstetrical services and care at a network of hospitals in three rural Kansas counties.

The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center, based at KU School of Nursing, has issued its first official report, pulling together data from 17 different sources about the state of the nursing workforce in Kansas. Nurse leaders hope the report will serve as a vital resource for decision-making, program development and the formulation of public policy impacting nursing in the state.

"By measuring what matters, we believe this report and those to come and the original research that is underway will empower the decision makers to invest in specific projects and programs to increase the number of nurses in Kansas,” said Barbara MacArthur, M.N., FAAN, co-director of the center. “Our focus is determining the true impact that nurses make on the health of Kansans — their personal health, the health of their families and the viability of their communities.”

Get to know Christopher Libert, BSN, a 2024 KU School of Nursing grad with a unique journey 🎓

Nursing isn't Christopher's first career. He joined the Army right after high school, got married at 19, was deployed to Afghanistan, Germany and Africa and now has two young children. His mother is a nurse and as a result of many positive encounters with other nurses, he decided to pursue a career in health care. After a five-year process of completing prerequisites online, Christopher chose KU School of Nursing to earn his BSN.

Following graduation, Christopher was officially sworn in as an officer, and his children pinned his lieutenant rank on his uniform. He will find out his new post in August. “I am the first in my family to graduate college, and it’s a big deal,” he said. “I am privileged and honored to be where I am.”

This summer, the School of Nursing simulation lab will integrate electronic health records (EHR) for use during simulations. Using EHR in simulation provides a more realistic experience for learners and helps increase the identification of patient safety issues, which can carry into clinical settings.

New scanners, mobile computer stations and EHR software will be installed, tested and ready for the first simulations this fall.

The undergraduate program simulations will also see several changes this fall, including a pediatric critical care simulation, mental health simulation and an advanced IV drip lab.

Get to know Erin Caplan, BSN, a 2024 KU School of Nursing-Salina grad 🎓

Five years ago, Erin had a gut feeling about the direction of her life. Originally from Prairie Village, Kansas, Erin earned a degree in viola performance and was a freelance musician and teaching music in schools. “There were aspects to it that I loved, but I didn’t see myself continuing that direction,” she said.

Sensing a need for change, Erin earned qualifications to work in infant nutrition at The University of Kansas Health System. Seeking more direct patient care, she applied to and earned a spot at KU School of Nursing-Salina. After successfully graduating from our BSN program, Erin began a new job in the medical intensive care unit at the health system.

As Erin moves forward in her nursing career, she leaves future students with these words of wisdom: “Confidence is a willingness to be uncomfortable… if you really want to get the most out of your program, you have to put yourself out there."
