Theresa Byrd, who is the deputy court administrator of the Family Court, was recently honored by the Children’s Emergency Fund “for her extraordinary career serving the youth of Jackson County since July 1971.” She has been a Family Court employee for 52 years.
The Children’s Emergency Fund (CEF) celebrated its 65th anniversary on November 16, 2023. The fund was established by Judge Henry Riederer in 1958 to pay for items that children needed but that could not be funded with tax dollars. CEF operates on volunteer contributions provided by the community.
As part of this year’s celebration, Byrd was honored along with Laura Tyler-Higgins and Jim Walsh. Tyler-Higgins, who is with Stinson LLP, has worked as a pro-bono attorney representing juveniles for over 40 years. Walsh served as the director of Juvenile Court Services from 1968 – 1977, and is credited with setting up its original group homes and overseeing the construction of the current Family Justice Center.
Three juveniles were also honored for the strives that they have made in getting an education.
Congratulations to all!
Attention Attorneys.

NEWS FROM MUNICIPAL COURT
Kansas City Municipal Court will resume normal operations and holding hearings as scheduled Thursday.
The Kansas City Municipal Court will return to business as usual on Thursday (September 14) following a partial shut-down of services caused by a security issue with the Regional Justice Information Systems (REJIS), the vendor for the court’s case management system. Starting Thursday, the Municipal Court will hold all hearings as scheduled and issue warrants for failure to appear in court.
REJIS notified Municipal Court late Monday about the security issue and that they would temporarily stop all services. Court dates for about 1,500 cases were continued and the court canceled the walk-in docket. Wednesday morning REJIS restored partial functionality and Municipal Court regained the ability to take payments and access case records. The functions that remain unavailable have minimal impact on the public.
