A great read for those interested in Natural History. Ellen Honeycutt from the GA Native Plant Society explains the terminology of Native, aggressive, invasive plants etc. Note the plants she has mentioned that were and still are intentionally sold or planted by builders.
I do see progress occasionally in business and home plantings by thoughtful landscaping companies that focus on better choices for this region!
Why Do We Have So Many Invasive Plants? The topic of invasive plants is inextricably intertwined with the support for native plants because native plants and their habitats are t...
Now that plants are back in full folaige, here's a helpful tip for those that are cautious w the "hairy vines" such as poison ivy. Read the link for another native plant w similar looking vines!
Climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea barbara, synonym Decumaria barbara) is a native vine with shiny, oval leaves that has recently been reclassified as Hydrangea. Native throughout the state โ although not present as much in the coastal areas โ this vine has thick leaves oppositely arranged on the stem which is a good way to quickly separate this hairy vine from poison ivy.
Tiny, cream-colored, fragrant flowers appear in late spring (May-June) in a flat-topped, terminal inflorescence. Seeds are a dry capsule. Vines can climb up to 30 feet. Sometimes the vine acts as a groundcover, but it needs to climb in order to bloom.

Happy !
Some states are starting to see caterpillars, so itโs a perfect time for a caterpillar identification refresh! Monarch caterpillars have a few look-alikes, making it more difficult to identify different species. Pictured are a black swallowtail caterpillar, a queen caterpillar, and a monarch caterpillar. An easy way to tell a queen and monarch apart is by the number of filaments. Monarchs have two sets, whereas queens have three. To differentiate between black swallowtails and monarchs, note the dots in the black swallowtailโs pattern versus the stripes of monarchs.
What are your go-to ways of identifying caterpillars?
