Photos from University Hospitals's post 09/05/2024

Lakeside Hospital, one of four founding predecessors to University Hospitals, was located near Lake Erie from 1898 until 1931 on what is now Lakeside Avenue. Most of the hospital's 250 inpatient beds were dedicated to patients who paid little or nothing. Ambulatory patients were charged 10 cents per dispensary visit, but records show that most fees went uncollected.

Medical advancements around this time contributed to the design of the hospital. For example, the understanding that germs cause many diseases and infections emerged in Europe in the late 1860s and began to be adopted in the U.S. by the 1880s. This prompted Lakeside planners to install a water filtering system and adopt a method of heating and ventilation that ensured the flow of pure, dry air.

Despite these and other near-constant renovations, additions and improvements, the facility eventually outlived its usefulness. Additionally, the growing presence of passing trains and factories made the location increasingly unsuitable.

The decision to relocate was made in 1914, ultimately leading to what is now University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.
