I surprised the girls I met at the Ludzi Girls Secondary School in Malawi with copies of Becoming – including a journal for them to jot down their thoughts. These are the photos they sent back. Their responses are just so adorable, and I knew I had to share them with all of you!

🚍SCHOOL BUS SAFETY🚍

With the new school year starting on August 15th in Killeen, we want to remind motorists about school bus safety.

When you see a school bus turn on its flashing amber lights, that means it is about to stop, and you should too. It is the LAW. When the stop sign and red flashing lights are activated, all traffic traveling the same direction as the bus from the rear, as well as all traffic going the opposite direction from the front of the bus must stop, unless the roadway you are traveling on is separated from the bus by a physical barrier such as a grass or concrete median or wall, then you should proceed with caution.

When driving near a school bus stop, remember children are present and drivers should be attentive, free of distractions and stop when the lights come on…it is not just the law, IT IS A CHILD’S LIFE.

📢📢📢 Academic Calendar: Due to weather-related closures in February, all Killeen ISD students will now attend school on Monday, March 21, 2022; this was previously a staff workday/student holiday.

The revised calendar maintains Good Friday, April 15, 2022, as a student/staff holiday and at this time will not be utilized as a bad weather make-up day.

As a reminder, this Friday, March 11, 2022, students will be released from school 90 minutes early (rather than two hours) as part of the missed instruction associated with the freeze earlier last month. Children often need to be taught how to follow rules. It isn’t enough to simply say “don’t do that.” Ask your child:

💬“What can you do to help meet our rules and expectations?”

Remember, it doesn’t matter if they think the expectations are fair or not. They simply need to take responsibility for meeting them. Remind your child:

💬“It’s your responsibility to control your temper. Just because your brother is bothering you does not mean you can push him. If your brother is annoying you, and you’re tempted to call him names, what can you do instead?”

You might have your child write down a list of the things they can do to help themselves follow the rules when they are tempted to break them.

PTA, Ms Baker & Home Depot are working together to update the garden! Grade levels will have planters for seasonal plants, herbs, fruits and vegetables. What a great way to take a break from being indoors and enjoy a little sunshine and fresh air while learning.

Shout out to Ms Baker for taking on this challenge with PTA and a special thanks to Home Depot of Killeen for taking on the garden as a Home Depot Project!

STUDENT REGISTRATION

Good afternoon Haynes parents,
We are in the process of building classroom rosters and looking forward to the upcoming school year! I would like to share some information regarding registration for your child, so we can make sure they are assigned a teacher.
New student registration for all grade levels is available through the District's online enrollment portal. If you need help completing your chid's registration through the online enrollment portal, please contact Student Services at 254-336-2822 or the home campus.
The student registration portal can be found online at www.killeenisd.org/registration_links.
The State of Texas requires student registration forms to be re-submitted each year. Parents/guardians with students who were enrolled the previous school year are emailed a custom link with their student's unique SNAPCODE, to access the online enrollment portal before the start of the next school year. Computer Kiosks are available in the office for you to use to register your child.
Required documents are your child's birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residence, and withdrawal forms from the previous school.
Please respond to the e-mail from Killeen ISD asking you to choose how your child will begin the school year, either in-person or virtual. For KISD to finalize planning, we are asking that you return the intent form as soon as possible. Your child's schedule and teacher assignments cannot be finalized until we receive your response and online registration is complete. Students may transition between In-Person and Virtual Learning should circumstance warrant. Parents should contact campus administration to discuss their individual situation and registration process for switching learning formats.

- Killeen ISD announced all students and staff will be required to wear face masks or coverings when social distancing is not possible. Students will be able to wear their own face masks or coverings as long as the mask is not branded with an image or text that violates district dress code. An exemption will be made for students who cannot wear a face mask because of a medical condition or disability.
