On Sunday night, Police Officer Jonah Hernandez responded to a business in Las Cruces, New Mexico for a trespassing call. As soon as he arrived on location, the individual in question fatally stabbed the officer with a large kitchen knife. A witness to the brutal, unprovoked attack drew his personal firearm and killed the suspect. He then used the fallen officer’s radio to call for help. Jonah was rushed to the hospital but he succumbed to his wounds. The suspect was identified as a homeless male with a long history of violent crime and mental health issues.

Officer Jonah Hernandez, a native of El Paso, Texas, was a two-year veteran of the Las Cruces Police Department and leaves behind a wife and two young sons; ages 10 and 2. Officer Hernandez is the first officer to be killed in the line of duty since the police department was established in 1928. He was 35-years old.

LCPD Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

The Las Cruces Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own who was killed in the line of duty after responding to a call Sunday afternoon.

Patrol officer Jonah Hernandez, from El Paso, Texas, who has been with the Las Cruces Police Department two years, was stabbed at least once after responding to a trespassing call on the 300 block of south Valley Drive. Hernandez was transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11.

The investigation is in the very early stages but, at this point, police believe Hernandez was stabbed by the suspect who allegedly trespassed onto the property. So far, the investigation has also revealed that the perpetrator was shot and killed by someone who witnessed at least part of the interaction.

A witness then utilized Hernandez’s radio to call for help.

The suspect is a 29-year-old man. Police will not release his name until his next of kin have been notified.

Officer Jonah Hernandez leaves behind a wife and two sons, ages 10 and 2.

Las Cruces Police will have additional information and anticipates holding a news conference early this week.

On April 22nd, soldiers from the Texas Army National Guard that deployed to the Mexican border in support of Operation Lone Star observed two migrants who were struggling to stay afloat while they crossed the Rio Grande River in Eagle Pass. In just the past month alone, there were at least 23 drowning deaths during attempted border crossings in that same area. Without hesitation, and with no floatation device, Specialist Bishop Evans removed his body armor and radio, and heroically dove into the treacherous waters to save the drowning civilians. During that rescue attempt, the swift current swept Bishop away and he failed to resurface. After four days of searching, his body was eventually recovered. Before losing his own life, the young soldier’s selfless actions ensured that the two migrants survived that incident. The pair were taken into custody for narcotics trafficking.

After enlisting in the U.S. Army National Guard, Bishop was assigned to the 4-133rd Field Artillery Regiment out of New Braunfels, Texas. He completed a tour in Kuwait, which regularly found him conducting missions in Iraq to support Special Operations Forces. At his funeral this past weekend, Bishop was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Lone Star Medal of Valor by the State of Texas for his extraordinary act of sacrifice and bravery. At a unit memorial service scheduled for this afternoon by his comrades in the 4-133rd FAR, Sergeant Evans will also be posthumously awarded the Soldier’s Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. He was 22-years old.
