DMV again urges customers to skip the trip for the holidays
Thousands of customers choose unnecessary office visits
CARSON CITY – As the holiday season approaches, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is again urging residents who don’t need in-person services to conduct their business online at dmv.nv.gov.
The combination of unnecessary office visits, upcoming holiday closures and a continuing staffing shortage is leading to long lead times for appointments and long physical lines for Saturday walk-in services in Las Vegas and Reno.
“Spend the holidays with your family and not at the DMV,” said DMV Director Julie Butler. “We need customers’ help to reduce unnecessary office visits and increase available appointments for those who really need them.”
Customers who purchase a vehicle from a Nevada dealer, in particular, should use online vehicle registration. About 10,000 buyers per month choose to visit a DMV office when they could register their vehicle online. Only 48% of those who are eligible use this service.
Another example is vehicle registration renewals, which can be done online, at kiosks, at emissions stations or even at select AAA offices in Las Vegas and Reno. DMV offices complete about 17,000 registration renewals per month, many of which could be done through the alternate services.
Overall, the Department estimates there are more than 200,000 transactions per year that customers could complete without a stop at the DMV. This leads directly to a lack of timely appointments and long lines on Saturdays among customers who could be spending the holidays with family and friends.
“Please start your DMV visit on our website and look at online services first,” Butler added. “We have good services but the system only works if people use it.”
DMV offices will be closed for eight business days during the upcoming holidays. Dates include Veterans Day, Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12, Thanksgiving weekend, Thursday through Sunday, November 24-27 and Christmas, Saturday through Monday, December 24-26. Offices will be closed for New Year’s on Monday, January 2.
We encourage customers to skip the trips and save themselves some time by visiting the list of available online services at dmv.nv.gov/onlineservices.
