A groundbreaking study has linked specific vision problems to the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. A condition called posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) often precedes memory loss symptoms. Characterized by difficulties with spatial awareness, movement perception, and everyday tasks, PCA is frequently overlooked. Researchers emphasize the need for improved diagnostic tools to identify PCA earlier, potentially leading to earlier Alzheimer's intervention.

This discovery highlights the importance of regular eye exams as part of overall health assessments, especially as we age.

Choosing between hybrid and scleral lenses depends on individual needs. While both offer advantages, scleral lenses often provide superior comfort, vision stability, and durability. However, some patients find hybrid lenses easier to handle.

Ultimately, the best option is determined by your eye condition and personal preferences. Consult with an eye care professional to find the ideal solution for your vision needs.

Ever wondered about corneal transplants? It's when a piece of your eye tissue is swapped out for someone else's. This donor tissue comes from a deceased person's eye.

There are various types of corneal transplants, depending on the specific issue with your cornea. If you're dealing with severe Keratoconus, a corneal transplant might be the solution for you.

This procedure aims to give you a clear view through your eye, potentially improving your vision. But don't ditch those contact lenses just yet - you'll likely still need a special type to wear on top of the transplant for optimal vision.

Sjรถgrenโ€™s syndrome (SS) is a common autoimmune disease affecting about four million Americans. Despite 1 in 10 patients with significant dry eye having underlying SS, it is often underdiagnosed, leading to delayed treatment and increased morbidity. This post highlights that SS can cause serious, vision-threatening extraglandular ocular manifestations beyond dry eye.

While many adults take supplements for various health issues, including cataracts, a new study by the AOA Ethics and Values Committee questions their role in eye care.

The study highlights the ethical responsibility of optometrists to advise patients based on scientific evidence, not unsubstantiated claims about supplements reversing cataracts. Cataract surgery remains the proven treatment, and optometrists should prioritize this information during consultations.

However, the study acknowledges the value of shared decision-making. In some cases, optometrists may allow patients to try supplements for a limited time while closely monitoring their cataracts to ensure they understand the potential risks and benefits of both options.

Please be safe this Fourth of July! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

This is one of my patients who suffered an injury from a firecracker exploding in his face. He had a corneal laceration and iris damage (damage to the colored part of his eye). Despite many surgeries, he could still only see hand motion. Luckily, he was able to see 20/40 after being fit with a scleral contact lens.

Please be careful if you are playing with fireworks this week! Happy 4th! ๐ŸŽ†

Understanding the differences between vision screenings and comprehensive eye exams can be crucial for maintaining your eye health!

While vision screenings can catch some issues, they miss many important problems. Regular eye exams by an optometrist or ophthalmologist are crucial for protecting your vision and overall eye health.

Swipe to learn more about what each involves and why regular check-ups are essential for preventing vision loss.

Cataracts, a clouding of the eye's lens, are a major cause of vision problems, especially for older adults. In fact, over half of Americans develop cataracts by the age of 80. But cataracts aren't exclusive to seniors - they can also occur in younger people and even infants.

The exact cause of cataracts remains a bit of a mystery, though aging is certainly a significant risk factor. There are, however, other potential triggers to be aware of, such as excessive sun exposure (UV rays), certain medical conditions like diabetes or eye inflammation, genetics, developmental issues like maternal rubella during pregnancy, long-term steroid use, eye injuries or diseases, and smoking.

Early detection and treatment are key to maintaining good vision. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam with your doctor to discuss your personal risk factors and treatment options.

Myopia Awareness Week is here, running from May 13-19! This week aims to shed light on the growing issue of myopia, a condition that affects vision and overall eye health.

Did you know myopia should be considered a disease, not just a vision problem? Itโ€™s caused by the excessive elongation of the eye, leading to serious complications if left unmanaged.

The American Optometric Association recommends eye exams for babies between 6-12 months, once between ages 3-5, and annually thereafter. Regular check-ups are crucial, even for healthy children.

Prevention is key! Encourage outdoor play for at least 2 hours a day to help reduce the risk of developing myopia. If myopia is already present, consult your eye care provider about control treatments to slow its progression.

Let's work together to spread awareness and protect our children's vision! ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ๐Ÿ’ก

Why do patients wait until the end of the day right before the weekend to call with a problem?

I cannot tell you how many patients call the office at 4:50pm on a Friday with a problem they have had for days!

Frequent issues: A red eye that showed up on Tuesday but has gotten worse, flashes and floaters that happened yesterday, metal in the eye from this morning and eye seems to be in more pain and has more redness. All of these are emergencies and must be seen right away.

Please call us when the problem starts so we can get you the help you need sooner than later!

๐Ÿ“ Assume every patient has the disease until proven otherwise: Prioritize dry eye assessments in every exam.

๐Ÿ“ Educate patients on good hygiene: Encourage hygiene practices like hydration, avoiding fans at night, and using humidifiers. Heat masks and lid cleaners can also help, while acknowledging the limitations of artificial tears.

๐Ÿ“ Use prescription drops and treatments: Utilize low-dose steroids for inflammation, and consider long-term options like cyclosporine or lifitegrast drops. Explore neurostimulation alternatives for patients overwhelmed by multiple drops.
๐Ÿ“ Offer in-office treatments to further target underlying etiologies: IPL for ocular rosacea, TearCare for lid function, and packages combining therapies for maximal benefits. Punctal plugs may be suitable for some cases.
๐Ÿ“ Consider merits of biologics: Biologics like autologous serum drops or amniotic membrane contact lenses can be effective for persistent cases, while OXERVATEโ„ข drops target neurotrophic keratitis.

There are two main types of scleritis:

โ–ช Anterior scleritis (occurs at the front of the eye)
โ–ช Posterior uveitis (occurs at the back of the eye)

Anterior scleritis, is more common than posterior scleritis. There are three types of anterior scleritis. The most common type can inflame the whole sclera or a section of it and is the most treatable. Another type causes tender nodules (bumps) to appear on the sclera, and the most severe can be very painful and destroy the sclera.

Posterior scleritis is the rarer of the two types. People with this type of scleritis may have pain and tenderness. This form can cause problems resulting in retinal detachment and angle-closure glaucoma.

Most people only have one type of scleritis, but others can have it at both the front and back of the eye.

Originally initiated in December 2022, the CLARITY program consists of three double-masked, randomized, U.S.-based, multi-center, safety/efficacy trials to further evaluate LNZ100 and LNZ101 for the treatment of presbyopia.

Zeroing in on these phase 3, 6-week efficacy trials, these include:
โ–ช CLARITY 1 for LNZ100 (NCT05656027)
โ–ช CLARITY 2 safety study (NCT05753189)

Together, the studies enrolled a total of 1,059 participants (aged 45 to 75) with a refractive range of 4.0D spherical equivalent (SE) to +1.0D SE with subjects who previously had LASIK surgery or were pseudophakes.

The setup: Patients were randomized into three groups to receive bilateral doses of:
โ–ช Group 1: LNZ101
โ–ช Group 2: Placebo
โ–ช Group 3: LNZ100

Just one was established: the percentage of participants who achieved three-lines or greater improvement in best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) at near without losing one-line (5 letters or more of distance vision) at 3 hours post-treatment.
