February has been designated as a month-long celebration of people of African descent and their contributions to American society.

The first celebration of Black History Week was observed in Feb., 1926. Later, this was expanded to a month in 1976 as part of our bicentennial. Nearly 47 million U.S. residents identify as Black or African American (U.S. Census 2019).

During this month we recognize the struggles African Americans faced in achieving full citizenship in the United States and remember all the work that still needs to be done.
