A summer of magic. A lifetime of music. The moment you step onto the grounds, you join a community that empowers students to be artists.
Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) is recognized internationally as a premier summer training program for aspiring young musicians and is the only program of its kind associated with one of the world’s great symphony orchestras. Under the guidance of distinguished professionals, and in the presence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), students are immersed in an atmosphere of extraor
PRACTICE: Trumpeter JoAnn Lamolino (Boston University Tanglewood Institute - BUTI’96,’97, CFA’00) practices yoga and mindfulness alongside performance to ease her nerves onstage.
Lamolino started doing yoga as an undergraduate at Boston University School of Music, but she didn’t begin practicing mindfulness and yoga to ease her nerves onstage until after some “crash-and-burn” orchestral auditions around the country a few years later. Integrating a daily mindfulness practice improved her focus and interactions with others. Before auditioning or performing, Lamolino would practice positive self-talk, center her mind and body as she sat down to play, and visualize herself playing beautifully.
“The improvement to my trumpet playing was actually quite significant,” says Lamolino, who lives in New Jersey but is associate principal trumpet in the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and teaches at the University of Hawaii. “I started to advance in auditions. It got more and more fun, and then eventually I had my first [audition] win.”
After becoming certified in kundalini yoga, many of her early students were fellow musicians, and she recognized that the inner work she had done could benefit other performers. Today, musicians from across the country can log on to Lamolino’s classes, seminars, and one-on-one sessions.

Peggy Stern is as well-known as a composer as she is known for her fine piano playing. She arrived at jazz via classical music, R&B, and salsa. Her music has a particularly broad ethnic base — in addition to European and American classical music, Peggy’s music draws from Brazilian, African, Jewish, Irish, Cuban, trad jazz, progressive jazz, and western swing.
Peggy has composed, played, recorded, and toured in a wide variety of situations: from solos to octets to jazz choruses. Her compositions range from highly original pieces to reharmonized jazz standards. “Everything she writes wants to dance, ” says Ken Dais of Jazziz. Peggy has performed (and was artistic director of) in LuluFest Lenox ’23 (“where the progressives meet the traditions, and all the leaders are women”).
Proud to make Pittsfield her new home for the summers, she is eager to share her music in the Berkshires!
