Goodbye, Columbus? Here's what Indigenous Peoples' Day means to Native Americans A growing movement recasts Oct. 11 as a day to appreciate the diversity and history of Indigenous communities. That visibility, say Native Americans, can help us see what else needs to change.
Did you know that every year, libraries across the United States celebrate Banned Books Week? The Transylvania Library participates in this annually because it's important to us as librarians to protect the freedom to read whatever you want and to fight against censorship. Below is an infographic from the American Library Association showing the breakdown of 156 challenges received in 2020 - books, media and displays are still being challenged today. Visit the library to see the display we've put up this week to highlight books that have been challenged, and to show the history of challenges to books throughout the years. You may even see some of your favorite books on display.
We are SO excited when students can explore their interests with our collections!

One year ago, we added resources and information to our website about Juneteenth. Today, it is now a federal holiday. There is still so much work to do, and a way to begin that work is to read and learn and educate yourself. Reach out to any librarian, and we’ll be more than happy to help you on this important journey.
Today is Juneteenth, an annual celebration of the day when a group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were notified of their emancipation. If you're curious about the origin of this day, or want to read more about it, the library has a resource guide just for you: https://libguides.transy.edu/juneteenth

The school plans to honor the author, along with student winner Olivia O'Neal Forester, at an awards event sometime this fall.
Celebrating Pride Week at Transy can mean a lot of different things! There are events to attend, and people to meet, but there are also things to read and chances to learn! One of our student workers, Dominiq Wilson, has pulled together a list of some of the resources held by our library, found here: https://transy.on.worldcat.org/list/17709491
You can also check out our Project One collection by coming to the library in person!
As we continue to see reports of violence against Black and AAPI communities, we want to remind the Transy community (and anyone else who may find it) of our Anti-Racism resource guide. The front page now has a brief list of resources specifically related to anti-racism towards the AAPI community. As always, we're happy to hear suggestions or additions to this guide, and it is an ever-evolving document.

February is almost over which means that the acknowledgement of Black History Month would appear to be over as well. However, just because these 28 days have passed, it doesn’t mean we should stop learning, stop exposing ourselves to new lessons. The below opinion piece suggests that it’s time to use what we know of the past to improve the present. How can we be a part of that?
The library has our anti-racism guide, databases specifically dedicated to African American history in the United States, and librarians who can help you access all of this information!
https://www.chicagotribune.com/columns/dahleen-glanton/ct-glanton-black-history-month-20210225-bh5wnbdzijg2dgqqm2dagxqvey-story.html
Column: It’s time to rethink Black History Month Let's focus on improving the present rather than looking back at the past, Dahleen Glanton writes.
If you’re letting February pass you by without engaging in some anti-racist actions, let us suggest looking over this syllabus for a course called Black Womanhood, to be taught at Johns Hopkins this spring. There are readings and information that can give you a starting point to teach yourself about important aspects of history you may not know. And if you want help finding articles in our databases, just ask a librarian!

If you haven't heard of Rachel Cargle, she's a great name to know. Throughout the month of February, she is offering things we should learn about. Do a Google search, read a Wikipedia page, engage with history you might not know. Heck, you can even ask a librarian!

Every February, there is national recognition of Black History Month. As we've seen from the events of this past year, the structural racism present in our society, and the ways in which we all can do better, Black history is intrinsic to American history. Our anti-racism resources page is still active, and updated with suggestions and new materials (https://libguides.transy.edu/antiracism).
Throughout the month, we will endeavor to share the resources that the library has, to share posts from people who know more than we do about the history that needs to be taught, and to listen to Black people about what is important.

Have you seen the hashtag on social media lately? If you're like me, the very first time I saw it, I thought it might have something to do with SARS, the virus that took hold of the media in the 2002. But with just a little investigation, it's a movement to end the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a controversial unit of the Nigerian Police with a long record of abuses.
At Transy, we want to help students become global citizens, learning about things outside of their backyard. Yes, there's a national election happening, but everything in our world is interconnected, and the End SARS movement plays into the movements that have been happening across the country. To learn more about this issue, you can use our library resources. We have full access to the NYTimes, as well as access other national and local newspapers for all faculty, staff and students, so this is a topic you can learn more about using library resources. (https://libguides.transy.edu/az.php)
Over the summer, we shared our anti-racism resources guide - this is a changing and growing source as well - for people on and off campus. Being informed about anti-racist movements and ways to educate yourself helps understand the larger context of the End SARS movement as well. Feel free to refresh your memory, and look for some new reading material: https://libguides.transy.edu/antiracism
Good luck on finals, Transy students! If you need a quiet place to write a paper or a take a test, come on by!
Today is Columbus Day, but it is also Indigenous Peoples Day. Did you know that Lexington exists on what once was Shawnee, Cherokee and Osage tribe land? To learn more about Kentucky's Native history, the Kentucky Heritage Council has compiled a document tracing back our historical roots:https://heritage.ky.gov/Documents/Native_History_KyTeachers.pdf
The Lexington History Museum also has an exhibit on the Native history of our area, including debunking the myth that Kentucky was never home to Native people: http://lexhistory.org/edu/not-just-hunting-ground-native-americans-kentucky-0

One parade is not enough to celebrate the marvelousness of BJ Gooch. While we were able to congratulate her and say our goodbyes last week, today is her official last day, after twenty-six years at Transylvania University. She's one-of-a-kind, and her presence will be missed greatly. Her work in Special Collections and the Transy archives has been phenomonal, as she's helped researchers both near and far. Good luck in your next chapter, BJ!
