Congratulation to Ally....she epitomizes a student who is and continues to make a difference while pursuing her passions. Well done Ally!...proud to say you are part of the Environment and Sustainability Studies program.

Throughout the past two years, I’ve been afforded the opportunity to intern at the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute at the University of Nebraska - an organization dedicated to achieving food security through the management of water resources. Recently, I was awarded their Water for Food/International Arid Lands Consortium (IALC) Student Impact Award for the water quality work I have been a part of.

As I wrap up my time at Nebraska, I think back to the crucial moments of learning that happen outside of a classroom. The Institute has a permanent place in that story. From weekly meetings to poster presentations, I have not only gained knowledge of environmental health issues, but I have also grown as a leader, communicator, and member of the Nebraskan community. I'm unbelievably grateful for the folks at Water for Food who have helped me use my passion for the environment to positively impact my communities. I look forward to carrying the lessons I have learned at the Institute into my future endeavors. 💕

From our friend and colleague Holly White and U of Maine

Fully Funded Ph.D at the University of Maine

Position: Graduate Research Assistant: Community Benefits and Offshore Wind Expected Degree: Ph.D. in Ecology and Environmental Sciences (also potential for I.Ph.D.)

Timeline: Fall 2024 - Spring 2028

Funding: This is a fully funded (4 years) Ph.D. position (tuition paid, yearly stipend, partial health insurance, research resources)

Faculty Mentor: The successful candidate would work with Dr. Caroline Noblet, Associate Professor, School of Economics, Dr. Teresa Johnson, Professor, School of Marine Sciences - University of Maine.

Project Description and Expectations: Offshore Wind Energy presents an emerging opportunity for generation of renewable energy. However, development of this resource will disproportionately impact certain coastal communities - at times imposing costs such as disruption during construction and changes to the use of coastal areas. These communities may have preferences about receiving support for the community during, and after, this transition to renewable energy. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team studying Community Benefit Agreements associated with offshore wind development. The Maine project team is part of a larger initiative with colleagues from the West Coast, and other Eastern Coastal states examining these issues. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn and employ both quantitative and qualitative social science research methods with a focus on disadvantaged or under-resourced groups, including natural resource employed community members who may be vulnerable to climate change.

To be considered: Please send an email with the title ‘Offshore Wind Graduate Assistantship’ to [email protected] along with your resume, a brief description of your interest/qualifications and degree program you would like to pursue. After initial conversations, the successful candidate must apply and be accepted to the University of Maine Graduate School.

A past recipient of Grand Challenge grant funding is the Nebraska Community Action Research for Equity and Sustainability (Nebraska CARES) Hub. This project, funded through June 2024, incorporates the social dimension of sustainability by helping to reduce inequity in Nebraska in the areas of education and health. This important project is just one of the many ways UNL and its researchers demonstrate a commitment to all of the dimensions of sustainability.
