Congratulations to our staff member of the week, Rubi Perla Iglesias - Hey, my name is Rubi Perla. This is my second year at Turner and I cannot begin to explain how much I love it. I am currently the media clerk and the assistant basketball coach. I am currently in school pursuing my bachelors degree in early childhood education and plan on teaching it in High school. I have been working with children of all ages for the past five years and initially, education was not something I wanted to pursue. Five years ago I accepted a job at a daycare center and fell in love with helping shape little minds.
Congratulations to our staff member of the week, Loretta Crowder - I started in the school system in 2001 and got hired in 2004. I have 4 children that came to Turner and have all graduated. Congratulations to our student of the week, Alisson Santos Linares - Alisson is a 7th grader and was selected by Dr. Lise Smith. When asked about Alisson, Dr. Smith stated, “I chose to spotlight Alisson Santos Linares because she is an ideal pupil. Like many of her peers, she is a bright scholar ready to learn every day, but what sets her apart is her tenacity to overcome new and challenging situations. Alisson told me that using Chromebooks in class was new and difficult because she had different devices in her old school. She also stated, "I need help." That was music to my ears because she could have easily sat at her desk, confused and disengaged, but she took ownership of the situation and got the help she needed. Alisson is intelligent and has a sweet, quiet demeanor, yet she advocates for herself. I always encourage students to speak up and ask for what they need. Alisson did so effortlessly. I cannot wait to see her thrive on the Chromebook and strive for honors status in her classes because she is more than capable as she models good stewardship."
Congratulations to our student of the week, Jeremiah Johnson - Jeremiah is an 8th grader and was selected by Ms. Bilitis Mack. When asked about Jeremiah, Ms. Mack stated, “Jeremiah is very quiet which in my class can be hard to deal with as we do a lot of talking. However I am impressed by him anytime we do skits, conversational pieces because right when I think he might not have gotten it, he proves me wrong. He impresses me daily and he is growing every day. He might be quiet, but his knowledge is mighty! And I can't wait to see him grow more this year!”
Congratulations to our staff member of the week, Amber Walker - You blink and ten years zoom by! That is how it's felt serving in DCSS over the past decade. I get the opportunity to help students and families toward the goal of academic success. Math was my least favorite subject in school but I feel that problem solving is the skill that I've used most over the years. Sometimes it's basic addition and sometimes it's calculus. Sometimes, as heartbreaking as it is, the problem isn't solved but ten years in I still have the hope to keep trying. School Social Work gives me the sincere privilege to try and help and I'm grateful. Fun facts: Being a Wife and Mom of two little girls is my real job, I do not like animals (don't hate me!) and I love Perrier. Sparkling water cheers to a great year!
Congratulations to our staff member of the week, Dr. Lise Smith - I am a proud educator at TMS who focuses on scholars mastering ELA and Social Studies skills. While teaching these essential life skills, it is most important that I build relationships with my students so they feel loved, heard, and valued in my classes. I hold them accountable while provoking a thirst for knowledge and a higher understanding of the world they live in. Therefore, students must become self-aware and good school and community citizens. I am committed to building students' self-esteem by meeting their social-emotional learning needs as well as academic requirements. The most challenging academic course becomes minuscule when students' needs are met. When I see students' lightbulbs come on, I am convinced that teaching is the most valuable profession I have encountered yet. My passion for education comes from parents who instilled its value in breaking down barriers. I am a proud product of DPS, and I was fortunate to have some exceptional teachers who inspired me beyond my potential. I must pay it forward. My husband and I are Detroit natives and proud parents of a working professional, college Freshman, and high school student in DCSS.
Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all - Aristotle.
Congratulations to our staff member of the week, Bilitis Mack - I am Bilitis Mack a.k.a Bibi. I am originally from Venezuela and moved to the US when I was 11. I grew up in Boca Raton, FL. Joined the US Army while in high school and served for 14 years. I have been married for 16 years with 5 kids, 4 girls and 1 boy! I made a goal to get my Bachelor's degree before my oldest did, so in 2021 I enrolled at SEU as an undergrad and studied Organizational Leadership, graduating May 2023. And after a lot of praying, I was led into teaching and now I am here at TMS teaching Spanish and loving it.
