📢Last night, south swell activity combined with a 🌊high tide significantly eroded the existing sand berm that typically protects the Peninsula's surrounding areas. This resulted in seawater intrusion along the boardwalk on the ocean side of the Peninsula.

There were no reports of water inundation into homes or property damage.

Over the last several weeks, our Long Beach Parks, Recreation & Marine (PRM) heavy equipment operators have been fortifying this berm along the Peninsula to protect against current and projected swell activity from Baja California.

As we have done in years past, PRM’s heavy equipment operators will continue to fortify the berm. The next high tide is tonight at 8:30 p.m. and will measure 6.5 ft.

Long Beach City will continue to monitor the high tide and swell activity throughout the afternoon into the evening. Storm drain systems in and around the Peninsula area remain fully operational.

🚒 Sandbags are available at the 72nd Place Lifeguard Station from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to further assist residents.

This evening at 6:21 pm, responded to reports of a single vehicle traffic accident on Studebaker Rd. just south of Loynes Dr. Upon the arrival of fire units it was determined that the vehicle had gone off the road and entered the water. The vehicle was submerged in approximately 10 feet of water. The Long Beach Fire Marine Safety Dive-Rescue team, LBFD US&R team, and L.A. County Fire Department Heavy Wrecker was immediately requested for additional support and assistance. Divers entered the water and pulled a patient out. That patient was transported to a local area hospital and was later determined deceased. As divers continued their search, an additional patient was found. That patient was trapped inside the vehicle. The Heavy Wrecker successfully removed the vehicle from the water where the second patient was evaluated and determined deceased onscene by LBFD paramedics. Fire units have cleared the scene and LBPD remains onscene conducting their investigation.
