It’s only halfway through the week but it’s been an exciting one so far. My team and I are out in the district meeting community leaders in the nonprofit sector, attended ribbon cuttings for locally owned family businesses, and joined community group discussions.

I sat down with Megan Tagliaferri, the magical woman behind the non-profit Compound in Long Beach! Compound is a non-profit and for profit institution dedicated to art, wellness, and community engagement. It’s a healing space for community to gather over a meal and be inspired by art to move their vision for social impact. ✨

In the City of Paramount, our office joined the Paramount Chamber of Commerce for a ribbon cutting event to welcome Carniceria El Cortez. Ruben and his family worked hard to open 4 of their businesses throughout Southern California. They appreciate the support of our office and will stay in touch with us with any updates ✂️

And lastly, our SELA office provided the Huntington Park Kiwanis with a legislative update and information about our annual events. We also invited them to the upcoming SELA Clean up this Saturday where we will join the SELA Collaborative and other community folk to clean the city of Maywood, Cudahy and South Gate 💪🏽

The National Council of Jewish Women Los Angeles (NCJWLA) are hosting their guaranteed income program for pregnant women. The Pregnancy Assistance Income with Dignity (P.A.I.D.) program provides direct cash assistance, with no strings attached, to pregnant people in Los Angeles County.

In 2021, the state allocated $35 million towards a statewide Guaranteed Income Program pilot where NCJWLA was selected as one of the administrators of the program.

During this graduation season, our office recognized the valedictorian and top students of the trade school, UEI College. It is important for our office to highlight the incredible value of skilled trades and to encourage students to excel in their specific fields.

Let’s continue to elevate these essential professions and the talented individuals driving them forward. Congratulations to the recent graduates!

What an eventful week for our team.

🎬 In the City of Cudahy, we tabled at the “Movie Night in the Park” event, featuring Disney’s Elemental. We handed out legislative coloring books and other state resource guides to the residents in attendance. Parents were informed about available resources and were engaged in discussions of what matters most to them.

🏞️ In Long Beach City, we also attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Ramona Park to celebrate recent upgrades, including new benches, improved lighting, and a hydration station. With the park in close proximity to a refinery, it was important to highlight the significance of bills such as SB 674 to historically underserved areas like Ramona Park. The event also showcased upcoming enhancements, including a mural and a new pool.

Team Gonzalez participated in the Back to School Resource Fair at the LA Care Community Resource Center in the City of Lynwood, CA. Attendees had access to free State and County health resources where 1,500 backpacks were also being distributed.

Our office took the opportunity to discuss SB 616, which provides families with additional sick-time off from work for important matters including healthcare.

Today in 1848, the First American Women's Rights convention was held to organize a movement for women's equal rights. Many individuals that attended the event were part of the anti-slavery movement including Lucretia Mott and Frederick Douglass.

Two wonderful events recently took place in the district where our office had the opportunity to attend.

After 67 years of no updates, the Paramount Library in the City of Paramount had their "Grand Reopening" event. The project was funded through the County with support by Supervisor Janice Hahn. The new building included environmentally sustainable features like a "live wall" with plants, updated technology for access to books and multimedia, and in a few months will offer library cards that will give access to the Metro as well. We offered a certificate of recognition to the staff for the wonderful milestone.

Our office also joined Long Beach City for the "Key to the City" event to honor Rev. Dr. Leon and Paula E. Wood, and Samuel and Beth Keesal. The Wood family, with over 30 years of experience, has been doing nonprofit work through "Success In Challenges," positively impacting thousands of families in Long Beach. The Keesal family has collaborated with nonprofits and local government for over 50 years, over the last 13 years they have hosted almost 2,200 nonprofit events at their law firm, Keesal Young and Logan. Congratulations on their recognition.

Recently my office joined the City of Signal Hill for the kickoff of their Summer Concert series!

Our State Park information booklets were a major hit! Did you know California State Parks and the California Department of Social Services have made it easier for families who receive CalWORKs, individuals who receive supplemental security income, and income-eligible Californians over the age of 62 to receive a free annual, vehicle day-use pass valid at 200+ state parks?

🎥 Our team attended Movies in the Park hosted by the City of Lynwood. A variety of pop-up vendors were present to share their products and resources. Our team engaged in conversations with constituents about the many services offered through our state office, provided books on the Constitution, books on state parks, Real ID information, and many coloring books for the children in attendance.

⭐ Our office also learned about a Lynwood business that specifically offers opportunities to pop-up vendors and has acquired space in one of Southern California's major shopping malls. And of course, we enjoyed the outdoor screening of Lightyear.

Congratulations to the Long Beach Gray Panthers for celebrating their 50th Anniversary!

Over the past 50 years, the Long Beach Gray Panthers have tirelessly advocated for senior adults, and social and economic justice.

In California seniors are expected to grow more than three times faster than the total population. California has created a Master Plan for Aging that includes over 200 active initiatives to prepare our state for a larger, more diverse, and older population.

On behalf of the 33rd Senate District, thank you Long Beach Gray Panthers for your advocacy!

60 years ago today, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed. It outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, s*x, or national origin. It ended unfair application of voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools, at the workplace, and in public accommodations. It also laid the foundation for future civil rights efforts in the United States.

Staying safe during hot weather is crucial! Here are some tips to help you and your loved ones stay cool and avoid heat-related illnesses:

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.

Stay Cool: Spend time in air-conditioned buildings or use fans to circulate air.

Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.

Limit Outdoor Activities: If possible, schedule outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening.
