Student Spotlight:
Hiteeksha Ghai (’20)
Campus Lead Ambassador at the India Student Hub. On her leadership experience she had this to say:
“Every school at UCLA, especially Anderson lives up to its notion of diversity and inclusion; which is what led me to represent the University as Campus Lead Ambassador at the India Student Hub (an initiative by Embassy of India, Washington D.C.). I aspire to connect students and faculty at the university with their counterparts in India to foster cross-culturalism.
Anderson’s prestigious MFE program is a perfect proportional blend of programming, statistics, math and finance; which is what I was looking for. From the program’s duration, to the curriculum and projects, everything aligns with the goal of practical training. The faculty imparts conceptual knowledge and all the theory just seems so relevant and relatable to real-world applications.
By studying at a business school, I am honing my networking and communication skills as the program connects us with alumni, corporates and students from other programs.”

“I have two passions in life: Soccer and Finance. I decided to join the MFE program because of its comprehensiveness and intensity, and it is one of the US's top Masters in Finance. The program covers the most recent and crucial topics in the Financial Engineering industry, and we have a faculty of pioneers in the world of Quantitative Finance on reach, every day in class, to help us assimilate and master the subjects. The MFE career service is permanently organizing professional workshops, networking events, and individual career counseling to prepare us for the professional world.”

Our Winter Quant Industry Open House was a success! We saw valuable connections made between industry professionals and our students, welcomed alumni returning to play the professional role on the other side of the table, and hosted stimulating conversations over a delicious dinner. Introducing Nikoloz (Nik) Iashvili!
Where are you from?
“I’m from Georgia, a small country of 4 million in the Caucasus region, on the eastern edge of Europe. I came to UCLA after finishing undergrad in Vassar College in NY. I spent one of the four years in Edinburgh, Scotland as well.”
Why the UCLA MFE program?
“I was trying to decide between pursuing an advanced statistics degree, probably PhD, or a financial engineering master’s. But, because I wanted to work in the finance realm, I thought I would not have much success as a pure statistician, so this degree seemed like the perfect fit. UCLA’s program is one of the very few offered in a business school instead of an engineering school, which allows for a more diverse group of peers studying in one of the country’s top programs. The faculty here are absolutely amazing. The professors alone were a big reason for choosing UCLA’s MFE. Not to mention the capstone project idea, which is something I couldn’t find anywhere else. Not having had experience in the finance industry, it’s a big help in interviews, and always a topic of lengthier discussion.”
What is your favourite part of being at UCLA?
“UCLA’s charm and unyielding positivity.”
Nik was a participant in the Rotman International Trading Competition, and enjoys mentoring the new team.

Can you do an uncanny impression of a statue? Would you know where to find the Birthplace of the Internet? The class of 2019 and 2020 grew a little closer today as they ran around UCLA’s campus on a scavenger hunt for our MFE Buddy Program. Groups from the new class of 2020 are paired with a current class of 2019 mentor, and we love seeing the photos of the fun they’re already having together. Plus, our winning team got goody bags! Networking at its finest.
Let’s give a warm welcome to our incoming MFE class of 2020! During orientation, our new students heard from faculty and staff, their class of 2019 peers, and from alumni that they have a whirlwind 15 month program ahead of them. But these bright students also played fun challenge games with surprising twists, practiced their 30-second pitches, and began forming the connections with one another that will launch them to success!
