Cashless Payments: Faster Transactions, Easier Borrowing and Increased Household Income - UCLA Anderson Review 05/31/2024

Digital payment systems can reduce transaction costs of receiving and sending money, and speed up the flow of information, thus enabling borrowing and lending. Because digital cashless payments can be tracked and verified, they can make it easier to borrow money and help lenders to price their loans.

Such a system is particularly beneficial to households that do not have sufficient collateral to qualify for borrowing under the traditional models of lending.

A Case Against Experience as a Central Driver of Innovation - UCLA Anderson Review 05/29/2024

Esposito finds that inventors who lose an early-career collaborator go on to produce 8% fewer patents relative to inventors who lose a collaborator between the ages of 45-59. When the co-inventors had multiple patents together, the loss of a young collaborator is felt even more, with a 13% drop in future patents for the surviving collaborator, relative to when a midcareer repeat collaborator dies.

The Role of Chance Encounters in Silicon Valley Innovation - UCLA Anderson Review 05/22/2024

In a working paper, UCLA Anderson School of Management's Keith Chen and MIT Sloan School of Management’s David Atkin and Anton Popov track 425,000 cellphones around Silicon Valley, through 218 million episodes in which two seemingly unrelated workers cross paths in coffee shops, transport depots, bars, apartment complexes, schools, restaurants, doctors’ waiting rooms and other locations away from their own offices between September 2016 and November 2017.

Focusing on encounters unlikely to represent planned meetings, the researchers estimate how much of the region’s new patent activity is due to chance encounters between workers of different firms.

Technology’s Hidden Role in the Accountant Shortage - UCLA Anderson Review 05/10/2024

In the working paper, UCLA Anderson School of Management’s Henry Friedman, MIT’s Andrew Sutherland and University of Mannheim’s Felix Vetter compared student major choices in undergraduate business schools with entry-level wages in related fields and firm-level investment in software. Specifically, the researchers used American Community Survey data for college majors from 2009 — when the Census Bureau began collecting data on majors — to 2019 and Bureau of Economic Analysis data on industry investment in software, as a proxy for a sector’s overall technological resources.

"I’m thinking through ways to launch more tech companies. Anderson has a fantastic tradition of launching consumer-oriented companies. We have a lot of successful food and beverage entrepreneurs, for example, which is fantastic. I think that’s important and don’t want to shut that down. That’s one of our strengths. But there’s also a real opportunity on the tech side, and I think tech entrepreneurs should find Anderson equally supportive. We’re still working on the right way to do that."

Professor Olav Sorenson
Faculty Director, UCLA Anderson Business Creation Program

“I’m hoping over the next couple of years to integrate UCLA Anderson School of Management's Business Creation Program with our undergraduate minor in entrepreneurship. Undergraduates would benefit tremendously from involvement with MBA students, and MBA students would benefit from the opportunity to manage and lead.”

Race to carbon neutrality: Why UK and EU must look to China for affordable EVs - Business Leader News 09/14/2023

In his column for Business Leader, Professor Chris Tang writes about how China is helping EU and UK to achieve its goal on EV adoption.

He argues that in order to meet United Kingdom and the European Union ambitious adoption targets, they should embrace those affordable EVs made in China. While China is too late to compete in the combustion engine cars, they may stand a chance to dominate the EV market, which as of 2023, China is leading in this market.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and Amazon have considerable claims to innovation, but neither built out its sprawling corporate presence of today solely with homegrown ideas or talent. They made scores of major acquisitions. Does their approach to M&A provide a road map for how a successful tech disruptor goes on to become a giant?
