HAPPY NEW YEAR! CLASSES RESUME TOMORROW - 01/08/2024

HAPPY 2024!
We hope that everyone had a restful and wonderful holiday break with their loved ones. Now that the holidays are over, it's time to get back to work.

We are excited to see everyone this week. What's the best way to kick off the year? With lots of kicking, punching, and energetic yelling!

See you in class!

RENOVATION - STILL ONGOING
Our renovation over the holidays went smoothly. This project is 15 years in the making and we are proud and happy that it has finally come to fruition! We are confident that this investment will improve your comfort, convenience, and overall experience.

However, we are not quite done yet.

Due to the limited availability of some materials, the guest restroom remains unfinished. We respectfully ask everyone to plan accordingly and use the restroom before coming to class.

Also, our guest area is not yet complete so seating will be limited.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

HAPPY 23RD BIRTHDAY EXCELTKD!
Wow! Twenty-three years went by just like that. We are grateful for another year to serve our students and families. Most importantly, we are grateful for your continued trust in our school.

ExcelTKD's first location on Topanga Canyon Blvd. We opened our doors on 01/01/2001.

12 Types of Company Culture: Which One Is Yours? 11/29/2023

Coming to America, I didn't plan to open a Taekwondo school. I wanted to climb the corporate ladder and achieve what was called "the American dream".

The company that I worked for was touted at one time as "The Most Admired Company in the US". Admired by whom? Investors. Hmm...

Then there was another list - "The Best Companies to Work For" or something like that. Nowhere was our company on that list.

In working there, I learned a lot about corporate culture, and best practices, and made pretty decent dough, far from the $6.25/hour I made at my first job at some random storage facility in Ventura.

The money couldn't make me stay. One morning, I called Irene (my boss, commander-in-chief, wife, savior, yada yada) and told her that I was going to quit. It's not because we already had Excel lined up. I felt so lost. It was every man/woman for himself in my department. A rudderless ship akin to the Bapor Tabo in Jose Rizal's El Filibusterismo. We were going nowhere. I gotta bail. I was 3 months shy of being fully vested in the company's pension plan. I thought, forget it. It's not worth it. So I wrote my resignation letter that same morning and gave my two weeks' notice. So I left and never looked back.

I would have stayed if they were true and authentic. I didn't care about the money. I was looking for a place where I could belong and grow. That wasn't it. No direction. Just money.

Looking back, I'm grateful for my experiences. I know what not to do. I kinda swore to myself that when I have my own team or company, I will do my best to shield them from what I went through.

I have yet to fully define our team's culture. We have crafted our school's mission and vision although it's not set in stone. It will be a living document that will adapt to change. After all, change is the only constant.

All I know is we aim to arm them with as much knowledge as possible so they can be prepared for the road ahead, regardless of whether they stay with us or venture on. We hope they, too, will learn to plant trees they'll never see.

Struggle is essential for growth.

It's often a little uncomfortable but necessary.

It's up to us to provide both appropriate challenges and the support our students to take the next baby step on their journey.

You don't get stronger by being able to perform something easily.

When learning something for the first time, there will always be uncertainty before certainty.

You don't build resilience if you never fail.

Our Story

The focus of our martial arts school is on physical fitness, character development and self defense, rather than fighting.

As soon as you become a martial arts student, you join a community that works together toward improved physical strength and stamina, better focus and concentration, greater self discipline, competency in self defense and, increased self confidence.

For us at Excel Taekwondo Center, the practice of martial arts means respecting each other, encouraging and supporting each other and celebrating each other’s successes.

These values are especially important in working with children and families — the primary focus of our martial arts school.

We have martial arts programs for students of all ages. For children, our emphasis is on character development and physical fitness. With adults, our goal is to deliver all of the benefits of martial arts, including improved muscle tone, increased cardiovascular fitness, lower stress levels, increased energy, and greater flexibility.

Self defense is also emphasized, but it’s always tempered with the training on how to seek alternatives to conflict.

Each of our martial arts instructors is committed to teaching the physical skills while applying attitude-shaping exercises aimed at bringing out the best character and physical potential in each student.
