July is â¨National Culinary Arts Monthâ¨, a time where we recognize the professional cooks and chefs who bring innovative and inspiring food to our tables.
Just last week, LATTC Culinary Arts was able to showcase that gift of food and hospitality. The team hosted an engaged group of 10 retired seniors from the Southbay area for a seated lunch following a tour of the facilities. The groupâs members are gathered through LA Metro and participate in monthly trips throughout the region, using public transportation to maintain adventurous and independent living.
Nothing brings people together quite like good food and shared interests. Thanks to our Culinary Arts professionals and professionals in training!

Happy National Mascot Day! Bucky Beaver has had a whirlwind year supporting our campus and its students through some of its biggest milestones. You may not know it, but the beaver is an appropriate fit for our college and its many career technical offerings. Beavers are known for their remarkable engineering and mechanical skill and their habits of industry.
We take pride in our mascot, Bucky Beaver, as a symbol of the skill and industriousness of generations of Trade-Tech students.

Yesterday, LATTCâs Employment & Career Success team hosted a special Employer Open House for our Cosmetology students. Throughout the year, the targeted employment fairs have engaged the collegeâs career pathwaysâincluding Culinary Arts and Advance Transportation & Manufacturingâintroducing them to major employers in the region like Disney and SpaceX who are looking for workers with their skillsets.
Today, marked a special occasion as we celebrated one of our student athletes, Diara McBroom. Diara has excelled on and off the basketball court. Not only was she the team captain, leading her team in scoring, but she was also on the Deanâs Honor List, served on the Associated Student Organizationâs Executive Board as treasurer, and was involved in the Black Student Union.
Athletics recognized this great student, athlete, and leader as she signed her commitment letter to
Congratulations, Diaraâweâre proud of all youâve accomplished here at Trade-Tech, and know youâll go on to do more great things!
Earlier today, LATTC welcomed nearly 500 students from nine local high schools to experience Senior Day. We hope more high school students will see a future for themselves at LATTC after todayâs Senior Day!
Earlier today, students from LATTC Culinary Arts competed in the annual LACCD Culinary Cup competition against LA Harbor College and LA Mission College. Itâs National Nurses Day! đŠđ˝ââď¸đ§đťââď¸ Trade-Techâs Registered Nursing program combines nursing courses with select lab experiences where students provide nursing care to clients in hospitals and other health care facilities. Here, some of our Nursing students work through simulation exercises with a very still âpatientâ under the supervision of their instructor.
May marks Foster Care Awareness Month! This month, we acknowledge the 463,000 American children and youth in foster care and the family members, foster parents, volunteers, mentors, child welfare professionals, and policymakers who help them find permanent homes and connections.
LATTCâs Foster and Kinship Care Education Guardian Scholars Program (GSP) works year-round to support the educational needs of foster/kinship youth. Last weekend LATTCâs GSP welcomed over 250 attendees to its annual orientation to introduce and connect individuals to the program and offer resources as they embark on their journey toward higher education. We welcome our foster youth and the foster care communityâand look forward to providing further support toward bright and successful futures!
This past weekend, a team of 20 LATTC Carpentry students traveled to Golden West College to compete in the annual CIEF Design Build Competition. In recent years, the competition has focused on building with a purpose and charged teams with donating their structures back to their local communities. The LATTC team emerged with an idea to build a chicken coop that will go to the college's Culinary Arts pathway in hopes that the program can raise free range organic eggs. We've got ideas for some delicious eggy menu items!
The team is up for a People's Choice Award for their chicken coop! Cast your vote by the deadline this Fri, 4/19 at 8 am:

LATTCâs Applied Sciences pathway got in on the solar eclipse fun! đđ The collegeâs Astronomy and Physics classes staked out a âpartiallyâ sunny spot at the North Quad and enjoyed the eclipse through protective shades and a sunspotter telescope, which projects an image of the sun onto a piece of paper. Here, the sunspotter displays the partial eclipse at 12:11 pm, toward the end of Los Angelesâs experience of the partial solar eclipse. See you in 2044 for the next total eclipse in the U.S.! đď¸âđ˝
Weâre not fooling you, second session starts in just one week (April 8!) with more classes added to the Spring schedule. Take some time during your Spring break this week to add a class or two.
On March 27, LATTC hosted a campus wellness day. Amidst midterm week, students were able to spend time with therapy animals, take part in meditative exercises, enjoy mindful activities like coloring and jewelry-making, and enjoy some healthy food prepared by Culinary Arts.
Wellness goes beyond physical health and encompasses mental and spiritual well-being, fueling the body, engaging the mind, and nurturing the spirit. We hope today provided campus with the lift it needed!
Recent studies have shown that spending just 10 minutes petting a dog or a cat will not only improve your mood, but also lower stress levels. đžâ¨
This week marks midterm/finals week, and we know many of you students are hard at work. Take a break this Wed, Mar 27 from 11:30 amâ2:30 pm at the North Quad for our campus wellness day where you can pet some furry friends, make jewelry, take part in mindful exercises, and enjoy healthy snacks. Hope to see you there!

Yesterday, LATTC celebrated Cesar Chavez Day with filmmaker, activist, speaker, and grandson of Cesar Chavez, Mr. Eduardo Chavez. Attendees enjoyed a conversation with Eduardo followed by a special film screening of his latest documentary film, âHailing Cesar,â which followed Eduardo on a journey to understand the legacy and struggle of his grandfather.
Next Sun, Mar 31, our nation celebrates Cesar Chavez Day, honoring one of our nationâs great heroes who tirelessly advocated to improve the working and living conditions of U.S. farm workers.
Note, campus will be closed next Fri, Mar 29 in observance of the Cesar Chavez holiday. đď¸

This past weekend, LATTC Design & Media Arts student Henry Kemp received a VIP LA Kings experience with suite tickets and ride on the zamboni while waving to thousands of fans. đâ¨
Henry was randomly selected as the winner of a promotion from our friends at Metro Los Angeles for using his GoPass in the month of January.
LA Metroâs GoPass program provides free transit to LA County Kâ14 students at participating schools, including LATTC. âI am in the fashion program at LATTC and often have to run to the fashion district to grab different fabrics and material for projects. Having the Metro pass has helped with that commute and transporting my materials.â
More than 3,000 GoPasses have been distributed at LATTC this year alone. Students can pick theirs up by visiting Bridges to Success (D3-105) a student ID + semester sticker, then visit the Office of Student Life (C2-105) to get their Metro Tap Card and GoPass activation sticker.

Wishing you a super week ahead!
On this last day of February, we celebrate both Career Technical Education (CTE) and Black History Month, while also looking forward to the month ahead where we celebrate Womenâs History Month.
Today, we shine a light on LATTC Welding instructors, Ms. Lisa Legohn and Ms. Darlene Thompsonâwho stand at the intersection of these three groups we acknowledge.
Ms. Legohn started working as a Welding instructor at LATTC in 1998. She reflects on being one of the few females in a male dominated industry and also some of the prejudice she experienced as a Black student and young professional when she first started out. Her mother encouraged her to let her work speak for itself and over the years, her doubters fell by the wayside as she became proficient and excelled at her craft.
Ms. Legohn has taught many, including Ms. Darlene Thompson. Ms. Thompson began as a student at LATTC and won the collegeâs Tools for the Trade competition in 2006. She joins LATTC this semester as a full-time Welding instructor after having taught at Pierce College full-time while also at LATTC as an adjunct.
Welding continues to support many other trades, including the auto and electrical industries. The college is proud to have exemplary faculty on boardâlike Ms. Legohn and Ms. Thompsonâwho represent the best in training, and do their work as strong, Black women in the trades, with pride and excellence.

LATTCâs celebration of Black History Month continues with the pop-up exhibition, âWhere Black is Brown: The African Diaspora in Mexico.â
