UPDATE: We have a lead! More information coming soon.
We are looking to identify this mystery WWI US Navy veteran, pictured in uniform during his arrival to Santa Anita Assembly Center on April 5th, 1942. While this photo has been reproduced many times, including at JANM, he has never been identified.
From the photo, we know he belonged to the American Legion Commodore Perry Post 525, dedicated to Nikkei veterans, and his sleeves and shoulder emblems indicate he served for at least 20 years as a ship’s cook or mess attendant. His hometown is unknown but from the original photo caption, we assume he arrived at Santa Anita as part of a 74-car caravan organized to transport families from South Bay cities like Redondo Beach, Wilmington, and Lomita, that departed from San Pedro to Arcadia that Easter Sunday in 1942.
If you think you know who he is, please let us know as we would love to properly identify the Mystery Veteran. Or, if you’d be willing to volunteer some time to help us go through archival records to help ID him, let us know as well. Any information or possible leads are greatly appreciated! MAJOR UPDATE on Manzanar Baseball Project from Dan Kwong: DATE CHANGE!
Manzanar has asked us to postpone the date of our games due to their extreme staff shortage and the close proximity of our date with annual Pilgrimage. Though disappointing, in ways this is beneficial to us too. More time to prepare everything. So we are now looking at the early Fall, possibly September 21. Stay tuned...
