This week we learned about the abstract “action” painter, Jackson Pollock, and how he dripped, splashed and “threw” paint all over his canvas.
All of the kids had a blast throwing, spraying, splattering and getting messy. They had such a fun time getting to experiment with all different tools and seeing the colors hit the canvas.
We used spray bottles filled with liquid watercolor paint, some squeeze bottles filled with watercolor paint, some squeeze bottles filled with liquid watercolors, rollers, paint brushes, eye droppers, forks, and bowls of paint that they can dip their tools in to splatter. There was only 1 rule in the art workshop today: don’t spray your friends!
🌱Thank you for donating beautiful tomato plants to our preschool! 🌱
The preschoolers gathered shovels from the sandbox and watering cans from around the play yard to help give their plants a new home. They are excited to watch each plants progress!
Our preschoolers enjoyed today’s lovely weather, celebrating Shabbat outdoors with Mishkon member Jeffrey Prince. He led them through lots of fun songs and dances. The preschoolers also made and ate challah and loved being together, Shabbat Shalom!
🌳Happy Tu B’Shvat!🌳
Our preschoolers celebrated the New Year of the Trees by planting parsley seeds, singing songs and snacking on the three delicious types of Tu B’Shvat fruits!

Painting with your feet is so much more than a fun activity the family can do together. Did you know using your feet as your painting tool: 🎨🖌️
🧠 Increases brain function
🫧 Provides a sensory experience
🏃🏾♀️ Encourages movement
💡 Boosts creativity
We suggest using a dollar store table cloth on your floor for an extra layer of protection between your artwork and your flooring. Happy painting!
Mishkon is proud to offer yoga as a part of our curriculum. Our young scholars love to participate in a practice that helps improve balance and flexibility while simultaneously regulating their sleep cycle. Yoga has been linked to improvement in overall mood and reduced meltdowns in toddlers. To that we say namaste 🙏 . Want to meet us on the mat? Link in bio to look further into enrollment.
Want your toddler to be a more engaged at mealtime? One way to encourage a better relationship with food is to talk about what you are eating. You can describe the food by going over color, texture, smell, and size or you can read a book that includes the food. We love The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle which covers so many categories of food. 🍎
We love bringing family and friends together under one roof. This years Hanukkah 🕎 celebration was one for the books! Thank you for those helped make this possible, like our amazing chefs! Have a happy and safe holiday season!
With so much going on this holiday season, we thought everyone could use a reminder for our holiday break coming up this month! May your holidays be relaxing, peaceful, and safe! See you in 2023!
Feeling puzzled over what gifts to get your toddler this holiday season? Decision fatigue sets in as we comb the internet for that perfect gift. As preschool teachers, we can vouch that classic toys stand the test of time. Generally speaking, the classics are more durable, educational, and affordable. We suggest wooden toys like a puzzle, or known classics like the Fisher Price piggy bank or stuffed animal. Know a great go to? Drop your idea in the comments below.

Our Story
Our educational vision is based upon emergent curriculum principles. As a school community, we are committed to values based on an image of children as curious, competent and capable of co-constructing knowledge. Our journey begins as our staff asks questions, listens to children, collaborates with them and documents their work. As children discover and explore, they may work on investigations that may last a few days to a few months. All projects must be meaningful to them and their world. By creating a classroom environment that allows for open-ended learning and discovery, we give children a chance to express themselves and understand their world. We also believe that learning is a cooperative venture that includes other children, their teachers, their families and our larger community. Literacy, math, social studies, science, music and arts are all emphasized through a framework of hands-on experiences.
The Preschool at Mishkon serves children from 18 months to five years of age. We provide a warm, nurturing environment influenced by Jewish traditions, where children can develop to their fullest potential. We treat children as unique individuals and support, guide and stimulate their social, emotional, spiritual, cognitive, creative and physical growth.
Our children internalize Jewish values and traditions through Shabbat observances and the celebration of all Jewish holidays, including:
• Jewish songs, Israeli dances
• Hebrew vocabulary
• Stories
• Jewish moral development
We maintain a low child-teacher ratio (7:1 in preschool, 3:1 for toddlers). Our ratios enable teachers to facilitate children’s exploration of art, dramatic play, literature, music, science, math, and cooking by helping them to engage in developmentally appropriate activities. Responding to the developmental needs of each child, we support younger children as they develop independent toilet learning skills.
We provide materials that vary in complexity and diversity, providing challenging opportunities for all children to develop skills and understanding. Children require years of play with real objects and events before they develop the ability to understand the meaning of symbols, such as letters and numbers. This learning takes place through interaction with others; children learn with all senses and through experimentation. As children’s understanding of concepts and language skills gradually develop over their first few years, they acquire an understanding of more abstract and symbolic information. We provide a variety of enriching books and literacy-related materials, such as finger puppets, flannel board stories, and tools for early writing. Further avenues for creative symbolic expression are opened through a variety of paper, water-based paints, markers and other materials. The learning experience is rounded out with outdoor play on large muscle equipment, field trips, undertaking classroom responsibilities and problem-solving opportunities with both children and adults. Our environment includes learning materials and interest centers which serve as the core of our curriculum. Additionally, we offer enrichment experiences in music and yoga once a week
