Ila Mae McAfee was born 1897 in the small ranching community of Sargents in southwestern Colorado near Gunnison. She died in 1995 in Pueblo, Colorado, where she moved after leaving her adobe home in Taos, New Mexico in late summer 1993.
She was raised on her family’s ranch south of Gunnison, and attended Logan County School, riding ten miles each way to school. In 1916, she graduated from Gunnison High School and then spent time in Los Angeles at the West Lake School of Art and the Haz Art School (1917-1918).
Returning to Colorado, she studied art with Catherine and Henry Ricter at Western State College where she earned a BA degree in 1919. The next year she went to Chicago and became a student of muralist James E McBurney and served as his assistant until 1924. During this time, she was also influenced by sculptor Lorado Taft. In 1925, she attended in New York the National Academy of Design, and 1926, the Art Students League. She also worked as an illustrator and painter of miniature animals during this period.
In 1926, McAfee married Elmer Page Turner, an artist whom she had met on her parent’s Colorado ranch, and that same year she visited Taos, New Mexico. Two years later, she and her husband settled there, and in 1929, they built the White Horse Studio, which continued to be her residence until 1993, when she moved to Pueblo, Colorado.
In Taos, she became known for her pueblo paintings and her depictions of horses and other animals as well as Native Americans, ranch scenes, and landscapes. In 1981, she was voted Taos Artist of the Year. She also worked as a WPA artist, completing many commissions for post office locations such as Edmond, Oklahoma, and Clifton, Texas.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lon Megargee, at age 13, ran away from his upper class home and went West in 1896 led by his zest for the wild and adventuresome life. There he established a reputation as a cowboy painter and illustrator with work most associated with Arizona Brewing Company ads featuring humorous aspects of cowboy life.
In his youth, he worked as a free-lance cowboy, exhibition roper, poker dealer, and bronco buster in Arizona, and then went east again to study art in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and to New York at the Art Students League and Pratt Institute.
He returned to Arizona, living in Cave Creek, Salt River Canyon, Phoenix and the last years of his life near Sedona. His Phoenix home later became a popular hotel and dining place called the Hermosa Inn.
Megargee was a ranch owner and also did oil canvases of the places he loved and the cowboy life he admired. By 1910, he was among the earliest resident artists, and was probably the best known artist in Arizona. His name was first associated with a landscape series of 15 large murals for the Capitol Building, newly constructed just after Arizona became a state in 1912. Another one of his paintings, Elemental, was the first painting by an artist living in Arizona to be acquired for the Municipal Collection of Phoenix. These works were chosen from entries in the State Fair, where he continued to win prizes for figure and landscape painting.
From 1911 to 1953, he did numerous commission works for the Santa Fe Railroad, including a work titled Navajos Watching a Santa Fe Train. Between 1915 and 1930, he also painted in the Los Angeles area of California and had entries in the California State Fair. He died in Cottonwood, Arizona. After his death, the Saturday Evening Post had a double-page reproduction of his painting Cowboy’s Dream.

ERNEST L. BLUMENSCHEIN
MEXICAN IN HALLWAY
alternate title:
HALFBREED AND HIS FAMILY
OIL 14” X 20” 1927
Maxwell Alexander Gallery is proud to present a new arrival by Taos Society of Artists Founding Member, Ernest Leonard Blumenschein.
The oil painting from 1928 includes the original gallery label on verso, along with the artist’s signature on the front (lower left) and back (upper stretcher bar): “E L BLUMENSCHEIN”
Upon further inspection of backing, alternate titles were found written in the artist’s hand, along with “Taos. NM.” This painting was owned by the same family since its original purchase, until recently.
The alternate title of “Halfbreed and His Family” indicates the mixed race of the main figure, presumably Half Mexican and Half Native American. This painting includes Blumenschein’s signature brushstrokes, with thick paint throughout, especially in the main figure’s blanket. The blanket covered background figures are painted in a modern simplified manner, something Blumenschein became most known for. Lastly, “Mexican in Hallway / Halfbreed and his Family” comes in its original frame.
This new arrival is available now and being sold on a first come first served basis.
