As part of our new series dedicated to spotlighting our staff, we are excited to highlight the exceptional educators at Proyecto's Early Childhood Education Centers (ECEs)! At La Guardería and Centro de Alegría, ECE Teachers and Teacher Assistants nurture children, ages 18 months to 5 years, fostering their social, emotional, and cognitive development. ECE educators are dedicated professionals who ensure each child receives the best start to their education during this critical stage of growth. We want to celebrate and honor the ECE Teachers and Teacher Assistants for their unwavering dedication and hard work in shaping the future of these young learners. Thank you for all you do! 💜

🎉 Last Friday, we celebrated our little ones graduating from ECEs to kindergarten! 🌟 Thanks to our dedicated ECE staff for helping to set them up for success. We’re so proud of these kiddos and excited for their bright futures! 💜

Last week, Proyecto Pastoral held its annual all-staff retreat at the Aliso Pico Recreation Center, featuring a variety of wellness activities. Staff had the opportunity to participate in a calming sound bath and meditation session, explore the mental health benefits of interacting with plants, participate in yoga, and get creative with a foam block printing workshop. A delicious lunch from In-N-Out topped off the day. Thank you to all our incredible for your "heart work" 💛 Your extraordinary efforts make a positive impact every day!

We are excited to announce that Denise Perez, a dedicated advocate who has served the Boyle Heights community at IMPACTO youth program for over 12 years, is now the IMPACTO Program Manager at Proyecto Pastoral. Denise cherishes meaningful connections with youth, parents, guardians, and community members. In her free time, she enjoys being with her family and her three boys. Denise looks forward to contributing to IMPACTO's mission in her new role, and we are confident she will continue making a positive impact on our organization.

We are excited to announce that Jennifer Sanchez-Guevara, who has been a part of the Promesa Boyle Heights collective since 2019, is taking on a new role at Proyecto Pastoral as Interim Promesa Boyle Heights Program Director. During Jennifer's time at Proyecto, she has led Promesa's Postsecondary Equity & Success efforts through its various strategic planning iterations, resulting in an expansion of the postsecondary network and increasing research, grant, and partnership opportunities with nearby colleges and universities.

Previously, Jennifer taught English and research writing at Pasadena City College and Cal State Northridge, and supported curriculum development at the University of La Verne's LaFetra College of Education. She holds a bachelor's and master's in English from CSUN and a doctorate in Organizational Leadership from the University of La Verne. We are excited that Jennifer will be taking on this expanded role, and we are looking forward to seeing the continued positive impact she will have on our organization.

Earlier this week, IMPACTO summer camp youth went to Knott's Berry Farm for their biggest trip of the summer! 🎢 We believe all youth deserve fun, enriching experiences like this one. This was our second annual trip to the amusement park with IMPACTO students, and we look forward to many more.

Now that another school year has come and gone, we wanted to take a look back at a few highlights over the past 12 months. A big thanks to our team, partners, and community supporters—we couldn’t do this without you! At the Guadalupe Homeless Project, 65% of residents transitioned to permanent housing. At our Early Childhood Education Centers, staff held 14 parent workshops. 100% of high school seniors in Academic Case Management at our IMPACTO youth development program graduated on time. Volunteers with Comunidad en Movimiento dedicated 1,800 hours to the program. Additionally, 1,600 local high school students received college and career resources from the Promesa Boyle Heights Collaborative.

Ahora que ya ha pasado otro curso escolar, queríamos echar la vista atrás y recordar algunos de los aspectos más destacados de los últimos 12 meses. Muchas gracias a nuestro equipo, socios y colaboradores de la comunidad, ¡no podríamos hacerlo sin vosotros! A recent LAist article highlights a 10% drop in outdoor homelessness and a 2% overall decrease in LA. Yet, Latinos, who make up 43% of the unhoused population, still face significant challenges, especially undocumented immigrants. Recent community efforts include listening sessions and advocating for unrestricted resources to help undocumented immigrants access housing. Success stories like Rosa’s, who transitioned from our Guadalupe Homeless Project’s women’s shelter to an apartment through a County program, show progress, but the struggle continues. Proyecto Pastoral at Dolores Mission is deeply dismayed by the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision to uphold anti-camping laws in Grants Pass, Oregon. As an organization, we witness firsthand the daily struggles of our homeless neighbors through our Guadalupe Homeless Project. We have seen our neighbors driven to homelessness as the result of skyrocketing rent prices and unfair evictions. The criminalization of homelessness, as affirmed by this ruling, is both harsh and unfair. It increases the difficulties faced by the most vulnerable members of our community, punishing them for circumstances beyond their control.

Homelessness is not a crime; it is a complex social issue that demands thoughtful, humane solutions. Proyecto Pastoral, unwavering in our commitment, remains steadfast in our support for the most marginalized members of our community. We urge policymakers at all levels to prioritize housing-based solutions over punishment and ensure that every person has access to safe, dignified shelter.

As part of the Greater LA Coalition on Homelessness , Proyecto Pastoral at Dolores Mission is proud to be part of a coordinated effort to rehouse our unhoused neighbors, but we know much work still remains.

The increase in Latino homelessness in recent years persists, making Latinos the largest demographic among those experiencing homelessness. To end this crisis, we must unite and collaborate on solutions that bring our unsheltered neighbors indoors and help those in temporary shelters find permanent homes.

Last month, Proyecto Pastoral's IMPACTO after-school students celebrated the end of the school year. Students marked transitions from kindergarten to first grade, elementary to middle school, and middle to high school. IMPACTO staff also awarded citizenship honors to students for their positive contributions. A big thank you to IMPACTO staff for their dedication to empowering the youth of Boyle Heights and celebrating their achievements!

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2024! Proyecto Pastoral's IMPACTO Academic Case Management team proudly supported over 125 students this year, including 62 seniors and 17 eighth graders from Mendez High School, Roosevelt High School, Hollenbeck Middle School, and Boyle Heights High School. We are thrilled to announce that 100% of seniors successfully graduated, and 82% of eighth graders completed their school year alongside their peers this June.

Throughout the year, students engaged regularly with their case managers to set, review, and achieve their academic, personal, and future goals. Their dedication, along with the unwavering support of their schools and families, has been instrumental in their success. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the teachers, administrators, parents, and community partners whose commitment and hard work have been vital in helping our students thrive.

Earlier this year, Enrique, the Director of Proyecto Pastoral's Comunidad En Movimiento (CEM), attended the inaugural international Housing Justice Encuentro in Barcelona. Organized by the Barcelona Tenants Union (BTU), the conference united housing activists, organizers, practitioners, and scholars from Europe and North America to address global gentrification and strategize collective action. Participants exchanged experiences, skills, and best practices to forge an international network of tenant unions. The conference fostered solidarity and collective purpose, showcasing the strength of international collaboration in defending renters' rights and building a global tenant union network. Enrique emphasized, "The need to defend our elders, the low-income people continues to be the fight of present times."

A principios de este año, Enrique, Director de la Comunidad En Movimiento (CEM) de Proyecto Pastoral, asistió en Barcelona al primer Encuentro Internacional por la Justicia en la Vivienda. Organizada por el Sindicato de Inquilinos de Barcelona (BTU), la conferencia reunió a activistas, organizadores, profesionales y académicos de Europa y Norteamérica para abordar la gentrificación global y elaborar estrategias de acción colectiva. Los participantes intercambiaron experiencias, conocimientos y buenas prácticas para forjar una red internacional de sindicatos de inquilinos. La conferencia fomentó la solidaridad y el propósito colectivo, mostrando la fuerza de la colaboración internacional en la defensa de los derechos de los inquilinos y la construcción de una red mundial de sindicatos de inquilinos.
